A special club function is being held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Saturday next, October 20th, to coincide with the telecast of the World Cup final. Following the game, the club Yearbook will be launched by the President, Tom Gilligan.
All club members are welcome, and a special invitation is extended to former players, so that old friendships can be renewed and revived. Among the large attendance anticipated will be invited guests, Cyril Shaw, who was club President when the club reformed in 1957, and another former President, George Hamlet. Both Cyril and George penned articles for the Yearbook, which are certain to be of interest to club members.
Although Sligo RFC is the second oldest club in the province [after UCG], having been founded in 1890, the club had a period of prolonged inactivity, until it was reactivated by Cyril and his colleagues. This season marks the 50th anniversary of that relaunch, and the club, which today, happily has record numbers of members on its books, is also celebrating 50 years of unbroken service in the promotion of the game.
With a World Cup final, a Yearbook launch, a 50th anniversary, and the imminent state of the art development and relocation of the club, there will be much to celebrate, so a great night is assured.
