Well Done To Monivea

Monivea, winners of the Connacht Junior 1 League, have certainly done the province proud in the AIL round robin qualifiers. Having lost their opening game to Ulster champions, Portadown [the outright winners], they made an excellent recovery, as they defeated Munster champions, Cashel [away], and on Saturday last, scored the winning try in the 6th minute of injury time, to defeat Leinster champions, Cill Dara.

As runners-up in the round robin, Monivea must now travel to Waterpark in Waterford city to play the home club, who finished second from the bottom in this season’s AIL [Division 3]. The winners of this game, which will be played on Saturday week [April 19th.], will play next season in Division 3 of the AIL. Monivea will carry with them into this game the best wishes of the President and of all members of Sligo RFC.

Monivea’s recent victory gives added importance to next Sunday’s postponed Connacht Junior 1 game between Sligo and Tuam in Tuam. If Monivea defeat Waterpark, only one club will be relegated in Connacht this season. Tuam are currently at the bottom of the league table, but should they defeat Sligo, provided Monivea win in Waterford, they would overtake OLBC and escape relegation. If Sligo are victorious, Tuam will be relegated, and a Monivea win in Waterford would gain OLBC a reprieve, so the Galway city side will be very interested observers at Sunday’s game in Tuam.
