A squad of 13 Sligo U8s faced Buccaneers in Athlone on Saturday last.
In the first of two matches Sligo got off to a great start being up 4 tries to 1 at half time but the hosts played themselves back into the match and went ahead 5 to 4 before, in the final play of the game Sligo scored a try to level matters 5 all. Sligo try scorers were Ross Hickey (2), Thomas O Hehir, Tony Kelly-Lynch and Ruadhan Feeney.
In the second match Sligo showed much greater tactical awareness and allowed Buccaneer’s two big players little opportunity to run at them. A combination of good tackling and strong competition by Sligo in the contact area allowed Sligo race into a 3 to nil half time lead. Although Sligo conceded two second half tries they ran out comfortable winners 4 to 2 as weather conditions deteriorated. Scorers for Sligo were Ross Hickey (3) and Ruadhan Feeney.
Team coaches were pleased by the committment shown by the full team as well as the effective tackling and ball-winning which saw them overcome their hosts.
