U16s Battle To Victory In Galwegians

This weekend saw a number of Sligo youth teams in action. The performance of the weekend from any Sligo side was undoubtedly the U16s victory away to a much-vaunted Galwegians outfit. The Sligo lads were looking to build on their positive start to their league campaign but were faced with a massive task away to tough opposition. The home side opened the scoring after only five minutes when they kicked a penalty to lead 3-0. Sligo responded well to the concession of this early score and with a backline inspired by B. McCormack, they battled back into the game. However despite the efforts of the Sligo boys, they were unable to breach the Galwegians defence. With only five minutes left on the clock, Sligo finally made the breakthrough when a superb cross-kick by O.Doherty, reminiscent of Ronan O’Gara, was inch-perfect before being collected by K.Cox who dived over for the match winning score. Doherty then added the conversion from a difficult angle to give victory to Sligo by 3-7. Sligo were superb throughout, their defence was faultless and they battled continuously to try and break the Galwegians try-line. Sligo will be delighted with this victory and will try to carry their good form into the Christmas break. Training continues as usual next Friday at 6.30pm in preparation for the league match on Sunday 14th December at home against Westport.
