Sligo’s U-20’s lost by the narrow margin of 3-0 to U.C.G. in the Connacht League, played in atrocious conditions at Hamilton Park on Saturday last. It certainly was rough justice on Sligo to finish as losers, as they were in territorial control for long periods of the second half, but they could not cross for the match winning try. U.C.G. got the only score of the game in the first half, and withstood tremendous second half pressure to cling on to their slender lead. Indeed Tadgh O’Neill seemed to have scored the decisive try for Sligo, but the score was disallowed by referee, Paul Jennings [Westport], for what he deemed to be a ‘double movement’. Sligo also missed two kicks at goal in that frenetic second half.
Among Sligo’s most impressive players were graduates of last season’s U-18 side, Stuart O’Brien, Craig Cooper, Daniel Westby, Philip Allen, Aaron Tansey and David Bergin. On Saturday next,Sligo play Castlebar in Hamilton Park.
