Sligo’s very impressive U-13 side scored a resounding 19-0 victory over Buccaneers in the Connacht Cup Semi Final at Hamilton park on Saturday last. The home side played some brilliant rugby, especially in the first half, and they led by 19-0 at the interval.
Buccaneers had no answer to Sligo’s excellent continuity play in that first half, and their defence was torn to shreds. The visitors showed a marked improvement in the second period, but they could not breach the home defence, and this half finished scoreless.
Sligo’s pack dominated, with second rows, Diarmuid O’Dowd Hill and Jonathan Draper proving to be unbeatable. O’Dowd Hill opened the scoring after 3 minutes when he crashed through the cover, following good work from the pack. This try was converted by the very impressive, Ciaran Blake, who proceeded to have a very fine game from the full-back position. Winger,Jason McGoldrick, displayed his elusiveness as he sprinted over for Sligo’s second try, while the third try was scored by prop forward, Martin Davey, following good pick and drive play from the pack. Blake landed the conversion.
In a fine team performance all 17 players used made an impact. In addition to the players already named, open side, Sean Donnolly, who only took up the game this season, had a very impressive outing.
