Sligo’s U-13 side will be striving to emulate last year’s achievement, when they play Galwegians in the Connacht Cup final in the Sportsgrounds on Saturday next [Kick-Off 1 p.m.].
Following their very impressive 27-10 semi-final win over favourites, Buccaneers, Sligo will enter this game in confident mood, their league defeat earlier in the season to Galwegians notwithstanding. Sligo have been progressing steadily all season, under coach, Michael O’Hehir, and his assistants, Finbar Filan, Roger Kilroy-Talbot and John Quinn.
Sligo have an excellent pack, and they dominated in the semi-final against Buccaneers, and indeed throughout the season. Certainly the influence of their coaches Mrrs. O’Hehir and Filan, both of whom were Chabal-like figures in Sligo packs during their halycon AIL days, have ensured that the forwards are not only well drilled, but also street wise.
Behind the scrum, there is a lot of talent, and while centre, Jason McGoldrick did enormous damage against Buccaneers, his backline colleagues are also excellent attackers. Sligo won this trophy last season, so there is a lot of optimism in the club that captain, James O’Hehir will return the cup to Hamilton Park. As many club members as possible are urged to travel to Galway to support the team, and the squad and their management are wished well by the club President and the Committee.
