The author of these notes met several club members in Croke Park on Saturday last. Even though the result was disappointing, it was a great occasion for Sligo sport and for all Sligo people, as the game was attended by what must have been the largest group of supporters ever to leave the county for a sports event. Former under-age star with Sligo RFC, Charles Harrison, had an outstanding game at right corner back, to crown a marvellous season for him.
Among these in attendance, whom I had the pleasure of meeting, was a former Sligoman Of the Year in New York, Shane Durkin, an ex-star Sligo player, who flew in specially on Saturday morning for the game. Shane sampled rugby at school in Banada Abbey, and was a member of the side which won Sligo RFC’s 7-a-side tournament in 1979, a side which was captained by an ageing hooker, who shall remain nameless.
