All plans are in place for the finals of the Tag Rugby league which take place at Hamilton Park on Thursday next [July 19th.] The finals are a fitting climax to a superb league which surpassed everyone’s expectations, both in terms of enjoyment for the participants and for attendances.
Four finals will take place, the bowl, the shield and the plate finals, with of course the Cup final, being the highlight of the evening. The winners of the cup final will represent Sligo in the national finals in St. Mary’s College RFC, Templeville Road, Dublin, in August. The teams in the cup final are the Untagables, captained by Simon Galvan, and The Brat Pack, captained by Jamie Livingstone. Both sides include a number of 1st XV club players, with Simon’s side having Joe Sweeney, Gavin Foley, Martin Feeney and Julian Rippon in starring roles, while Jamie’s team have Billy Leahy, Andrew Williams, Trevor Sweeney and David Gerrity.
With a try from a woman earning three points, compared to one for a man’s try, a regular try scoring woman is a huge asset to any side. Donegal Co. Ladies gaelic footballer, Maria Devenney has been outstanding in all games for the Untagables, and never fails to dot down, but Amy Gerrity, also a Sligo Ladies senior gaelic player, is a key player for The Brat Pack, so both are likely to make significant contributions to the final.
When these sides met in Week 3, the Brat Pack scored a narrow victory, so another cliff-hanger is anticipated. The Sweeney family are well represented in the final, as Simon’s wife, Noelle, and her brother Joe, play for the Untagables, while their youthful brother Trevor is a key player for The Brat Pack.
Following the finals, the presentations will be made in the Clubhouse, and the proceedings will conclude with a barbecue and a disco. It promises to be a memorable evening, which will bring the 2007 Tag League to a fitting finale. All Tag League players and supporters, and all club members, are cordially invited to attend the post finals entertainment.
