St. Attracta’s school played host to their first ever schools rugby blitz on a wet and windy Wednesday. This is part of Sligo Rugby Club and Connacht Rugbys Y.D.O. programme, their Y.D.O., Ross Mannion, has been in the schools the last few weeks helping get the teams ready for this the first of hopefully many Sligo Schools Rugby Blitz and matches.
The weather didn’t spoil the rugby on the day over 50 U14 school children from Summerhill College, St. Mary’s Ballisodare and St. Attracta’s took part in an entertaining morning of rugby. Considering that a lot of the players had never played rugby up until a few weeks ago, the standard was very high and the final match of the day between St. Mary’s Balisodare and St. Attracta’s was very entertaining with St. Attracta’s coming out on top in the end.
Sligo Y.D.O. Ross Mannion was delighted with the days rugby, “It was a hugh success, considering a lot of these kids have had little or no rugby experience in the past they played some very good and entertaining rugby, I’d like to thank Jean McConnell (Coach), David McEvoy (Principal) and David Kilcoyne (Coach) from St. Attracta’s for hosting the event and putting in so much good work with kids on the coaching side, also James Hardiman (Deputy-Principle) Ballisodare and Dervla Casey (Coach) Summerhill for helping us with rugby within their respective schools and bringing their teams to this blitz”.
