Sligo travel to Cornithian Park on Sunday next to play cup holders Cornithians in the first round of the Heineken’s Connacht Junior Cup. Kick off is at 2 o’clock. Cornithians, like Sligo, are something of cup specialists so a very competitive game is in the offing.
Since Sligo returned to Connacht Junior 1 ranks in the 1998/99 season, they have won the cup on two occasions, in 1999 and 2005, and they were beaten finalists in 2000 and 2004.
Until recent times their record in competitive games against Cornithians was unimpressive, but in the last two league meetings between the sides, Sligo were successful on each occasion, and in September last they defeated the Galway city side by 25-6 in Corinthian Park, and secured a bonus point to boot.
Sligo will field an experienced team on Sunday as no fewer than five of the victorious 1999 side, Peter Mullan, Cathal Culhane, Gavin Foley, Joe Sweeney and Joe Kelly, who starred in that 1999 triumph will be in action. They can also call on a number of players such as Gary Boland, Billy Leahy, Jamie Livingstone, Andrew Feeney, Ronan Gillespie and Ross Mannion who are enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment. The experienced Roger Burrows, Adrian McHale, Trevor Sweeney, Martin Feeney, Andrew Williams, Julian Rippon and Warner Wilders will also have much to contribute, as Sligo will field their strongest team for several weeks.
As many supporters as possible are urged to make the trip and lend their support to the squad.
