Sligo 2nd's v Westport Match Report

Westport 20 :: Sligo 2nd XV 7

Sligo 2nd team played a strong Westport side in a virtual mud bath in Westport on Sunday last. Because of the appalling underfoot conditions, the referee from the home club wisely ruled that all scrums would be non-contested, and this certainly did not favour Sligo’s strong scrummaging pack. Sligo were slow to settle and trailed by 15-0 at the interval. However, they responded very positively to team manager, Des Butler’s half-time pep talk, and they dominated the exchanges for long periods in the second half.

Sligo also had the consolation of scoring the best try of the game. Winger, John Bellew, showed tremendous pace and balance in the conditions, and following a mazey 60 metre run he touched down under the posts, with Fergus Horan, in his debut for the club, adding the conversion points.

In addition to Bellew and Horan, Sligo had fine performers in winger, Nick Reynolds, Ralph Lucey, Simon Coulter, Brian Hynes, Owen McDermott, David Kilcoyne, Robert Orbinski and Niall Quinn.
