PRE: Sligo Development v Ballina RFC 2nds

Ballina 2nd XV 7 – Sligo RFC Development 26

The Development squad played their first challenge match against Ballina 2nd XV in advance of the start of the J1A League in September. This was an opportunity for newly appointed Head Coach Ross O’Boyle and his coaching staff of James and Garry O’Hehir, along with managers Roger Burrows and Jack Barry to see the many new players in action.

Sligo had great depth in their squad and this was apparent in the many substitutions made throughout the game, allowing the former U18.5s their first taste of Junior rugby and they certainly made their presence felt on the pitch, getting stuck in from the start. Sligo dominated in all areas of the game, and the final score reflected this.

Sligo’s David Cawley intercepts the ball in the lineout

The pack dominated at the breakdown and in the lineouts, while the back line worked the ball out wide, stringing together some lovely flowing rugby, much to the delight of the Sligo supporters. Enda Gavin controlled the game at out-half and his passion and determination earned him the Man-of-the-Match award. The Development team will continue their pre-season matches against Galwegians next Saturday at 4.30pm.
