The City side proved too strong for the County team in the annual St. Stephen’s Day fixture in Hamilton Park. The game was played in ideal conditions before the biggest attendance at the venue this season.
Both teams included a number of players who play their rugby elsewhere. Included on the city side were AIL players, Mark Butler (UL Bohs), Paul Gillespie (Dublin University) and Shane Considine (Corinthians) as well as U-20 players Ross Butler (UL Bohs) and Simon Gillespie (UCD). Also in action for the winners were Paul Hogan (Nenagh) and Mark Harrigan (Ballinasloe). The county team had AIL player Niall O’Hara (Buccaneers) as well as Sean Henry (UL Bohs Academy), Jason Coulter(Peterborough RFC), Mark Coulter (Tullamore), Geoffrey Draper (Monkstown) and Buccaneers U-20 Player James Wilson.
The City team led by 12-0 at the interval with Ross Butler and Paul Gillespie crossing for tries while in the second half Butler again dotted down and towards the end scrum-half, Considine scored an opportunist try. Mark Butler landed two conversions.
