Sligo’s 2nd team had their first outing of the season when they travelled to Tuam on Sunday last to play a strong home side, bolstered by a few of their 1st team players, in a friendly game. Sligo played very impressively in the opening half, and led by 7-0 at the break. The home side raised their game after the break, but in the end were flattered by their 17-7 winning margin.
There were some fine displays from Sligo players, with Kieran Meehan impressing in the back row after a two year break from the game. Elsewhere, Thomas Quinn had an excellent outing at full-back, while Niall Quinn also did well at out-half.
A feature of the Sligo team was the presence of three sets of brothers. In addition to brothers, Thomas and Niall Quinn, there three Coulter brothers, Simon at No 8, and centres James and Mark, while also included were the Kiely brothers from Skreen, Dermot at lock and Sean on the wing. Niall Quinn crossed under the posts for Sligo’s try, and also landed the conversion.
There will be a return fixture between the sides in Hamilton Park on Sunday week, October 7th. Well done to the management trio of Michael Storey, Finian O’Driscoll and Declan Lynch for all their work with the squad.
