Usually when a club member is elected to high office, he is content to oversee proceedings and just become involved in sedentary and leisurely persuits. Current Vice-President, Brendan Leahy is certainly the antithesis of this stereotype. For many years, since his retirement from rugby, Brendan has retained a level of physical fitness comparable to anyone in the club, and has cycled the highways and byways of Co.Sligo, and indeed much further afield. Last week he took on a major challenge, when he travelled to France, and for six successive days cycled a stage of the Tour de France. Perhaps for someone, who for over a decade in the front row of the scrum, had to contend with gnarled props from the four provinces of Ireland, or from Canada, the murderous ascent of the Alps, or the 50 mile an hour descents in the middle of a group, may not seem as forbidding as it would to ordinary timorous mortals. Members of Sligo RFC will be reassured that not only have they elected someone fit to be Vice-President, they have also elected an extremely fit one.
The Leahy sporting genes continue to manifest themslves, with ex-Youth International, Billy starring at scrum-half for the club, and other son, Roger, with UL-Bohs., while Brendan’s nephew Malachy Travers, is a stalwart defender with the Wexford senior hurling team for the past few years, and on Saturday last was one of his team’s stars in the all-Ireland quarter final victory over Tipperary.
