Sligo 2nd XV 24 :: Ballina 2nd XV 18
Sligo’s 2nd team followed up their recent victory over Carrick-on-Shannon with another impressive display against Ballina in Heffernan Park, Ballina on Sunday last.
Once again, the Sligo pack proved to be very strong and laid the platform for the team’s success. In this sector, Kieran Meehan had a storming game, with the Kiely brothers, Declan and Dermot impressive, and, Aaron Tansey and No 8, Connolly also showing up well.
In the backs, out-half, Ted Mulvanney, impressed, while centre, Owen McDermott showed that he has a lot of potential. Centre, Clive Morris and full-back, Brian Hynes also played very well for Sligo.
Ballina led by 8-7 at the interval, but in the second period could not cope with Sligo’s storming play. Former 1st team player, Trevor Sweeney, just back from injury, scored a try, which was converted by Calry man, Hynes. In the second half, McDermott, Mulvanney, and substitute John Bellew ran in tries, with the accurate Brian Hynes converting all three to give their side a morale boosting victory. At the time of going to press attempts are being made to arrange a friendly home fixture for Sunday next. If these attempts are unavailing, there will be a training session for the squad in Hamilton Park on Sunday at 2.30 pm. Training will also take place each Wednesday and Friday at 7 pm.
Sligo open their league campaign away to Corinthians on Sunday week next, November 4th.
