2nd XV Defeated in Westport

Sligo Second XV 5 – Westport Second XV 17

Sligo’s Second XV travelled to Westport and were defeated by the home team in a crucial Connacht Junior 2 League tie on Sunday last.

The visitors had to field without unavailable out-half, Frankie Feeney and the injured Steven Connolly. Sligo dominated exchanges in the opening quarter and led in the 20th minute. Former Sligo Grammar School star from the 1995 and 1996 Senior School Final, Philip Henry, had a very impressive return to Sligo colours after being abroad for a number of years. Henry glided through for Sligo’s try and created many problems for the winners’ defence subsequently.

However, Westport gradually assumed control and they went on to score three tries, and run out convincing winners. In addition to Henry, Calry native Brian Hynes starred at full-back and later at out-half. Thomas Quinn and James Coulter were impressive in the centre. In the pack, nineteen year old Terence O’Connor was the star and he received able assistance Skreen born Dermot Kiely and Warner Wilders, who was back in action after a prolonged period of inactivity due to injury.
