Fixtures Fixtures Fixtures!

NOTE: The U19 league fixtures for 2009/10 have just been published to our Teams page.

There’s lots of action this weekend with all sections of Sligo Rugby Club involved.

At home we kick-off with a Juvenile blitz at the IT Sligo sports complex on Saturday morning (10am) followed by U15s at Hamilton Park (12pm), U16s again at Hamilton Park (2.45pm) and on Sunday Sligo RFC U17s take on Creggs at 12pm.

Sligo First XV are away to Buccaneers on Sunday with the 2nds away to Westport and the U19s away to Corinthians.

So get your Club colours on and do your best to try and support at least one of our teams this weekend!

U17s Defeat All Blacks

Sligo RFC 38 :: Connemara 17

Sligo travelled to Connemara for their season’s opener on Sunday and came away with a comprehensive victory by 38-17.

With a great first half display of forwards power and backs speed and flair Sligo took a deserved lead of  31 -5 into half time. The Galway side  came back well into the game at start of the second half as Sligo eased up their pressure game, but the visitors stepped up a gear in the final 10 minutes to take the final score of the day. Tries from Diarmuid O’Dowd Hill, Sean Conlon, James Mullen, Gary O Hehir and Luke Glesson were all converted by Mullen who also popped over a penalty to see the north westerners get off to  perfect start to their league campaign.

Sligo youth players on Interpro duty

Congratulations to Aaron Spring who has been playing with Connacht U20s in the recent interpro series. Although bareley 18yrs he has forced his way on to a very good squad who just narrowly missed out winning the interpro series. Aaron will be underage again next season and this very talented young player is progresing niceley. Also on the U20 squad is Rory Kerins, a product of Sligo RFC but is now playing with UL Bohemians in Limerick.

Also Sligo have two players on the highly successful U18 squad. They are local Strandhill lad David Heath who came from the underage section of the club and Oscar Van Der Grijn. The U18s won the interpro
series comprehensiveley and its great to see the Sligo players involved. Well done to all the lads involved and to the club and school coaches who helped in getting them to this level.

U14 Training

Training commences next Thursday the 17th of September at Hamilton Park in Strandhill from 7 to 8 o’clock.

This season Any player born in 1996 qualifies for the under 14 age group. New players are always welcome.

Disco Time!

“Scrumtious” Sligo RFCs, alcohol free, teenage Disco is Back.

Following the summer break tickets are on sale from the usual sellers for the first teenage alcohol-free disco of the season, which takes place in the Clubhouse on Friday, September 18th at 9 pm. Early purchase is always advised, and as usual, no cash will be accepted on the night. The Event Organiser, Justin Harte has everything in readiness and the Chief Steward will be Niall Draper. All stewards should report to Niall for their postings not later than 8.30 pm on that evening

Youth (U13 to U17) Registration for 2009/10 Season

Youth Player (U13 to U17) Registration for Sligo Rugby Club will take place on Saturday 5th September in the Clubhouse at between 11am and 1pm and between 5pm and 7pm. All new members are very welcome.

Please note that players must be born between 1993 and 1997 to be eligible for Youth Rugby. U19s are being registered with Senior players.

The new age structure for Youth Rugby for the 2009/10 season is as follows

Born 1993 – U17
Born 1994 – U16
Born 1995 – U15
Born 1996 – U14
Born 1997 – U13

For information regarding Juvenile Registration please see this post. If you have both Juvenile and Youth players registering in your family you can do both at the Juvenile event.

U16 & U17 Elite Training

There will be an elite measurement and testing day for all players born in the years 1994 (U16) and 1993 (U17) at the Clubhouse this Saturday (August 29th) at 11.30am. Bring runners and if it’s raining make sure you have wet gear and a towel.

Under 19 Training Starts

Training for U19s begins on July 19th at Hamilton Park. Please confirm start time with coaches/management.

IRFU POLICY: DATE OF ELIGIBILITY CHANGES FROM BEGINNING OF 2009/10 SEASON

From September 2009, the IRFU will implement the International Rugby Board (IRB) date of eligibility, which is defined as the age of any player on the 1st of January of that season (in 2009/10 an U15 player will be defined as a player “Under 15 years of age on the 1st January 2010�) viz. born in 1995 or later.

After consultation with the relevant Branch and Union stakeholders regarding the most appropriate age bands, to maximise transition of players through youth and schools rugby to the adult game, the following age categories has been agreed:

Leprechaun Rugby: 7s

Mini Rugby: 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s and 12s

Youth Rugby: 13s, 15s, 17s and 19s (Branches have the ability to operate intermediate ages at 14s, 16s and 18s if there is appropriate numbers.)

Schools: 13s, 14s, 15s, 16s and/or 17s, and 19s

U13s defeated in Connacht decider

Sligo U13s fell at the final hurdle in their bid for Connacht cup glory when they went down to a strong Galwegians outfit at the Sportsground in Galway last Saturday.

Following earlier round victories over Gort, Castlebar and and Corinthians, the Sligo boys had high hopes going into this encounter but the sharper Galway outfit put paid to Sligo’s best efforts.

Sligo U-13s prepare for Connacht final

Sligo U-13s face the biggest challenge of their rugby careers, to date, when they lock horns with Galwegians U-13s in the final of the Connacht U13 cup on Saturday. A 12 noon showdown at the Sportsgrounds in Galway sees the Sligo boys take on a much fancied Galwegians outfit for the coveted title of Connacht champions.

Sligo RFC U18's in All Ireland Cup finals

Earlier this season the Sligo RFC U18 side won the Connacht U18 league and have now qualified for the All Ireland U18 Cup Competition. Sligo are due to face the Munster champions Highfield RFC in the semi-final which takes place at The Sportsground in Galway this Saturday March 28th. Kick off is at 14:30hrs.
