U14s Top the League

Sligo RFC 29 :: Creggs RFC 5

Sligo under 14s topped the league on Sunday with a win against Creggs of Roscommon. The game was a much laboured affair in the opening minutes with the Xmas rest taking its toll on the skills of the game, Sligo broke the deadlock when Darragh Byrne ran a try in from a good individual run off the wing. Evan Mc Garth stepped up to kick the conversion from a difficult angle but the trusty boot failed to bring it between the posts. From the kick off Rory Mullan collected the ball and with some better movement the ball was taken into Creggs 22 by Steven Kearins where he drew the defence in to create a small gap for Evan McGrath to touch down for a fine try. Under 14s Continue to Impress

Sligo RFC 39 :: Westport RFC 0

The Sligo under 14s notched up an other convincing win last Sunday against Westport at home. From the kick off the home team hit the ground running piling pressure on to Westport’s defence and it was not long before Conan O’Donnell ran in a superb try. The coversion didn’t make it over the bar but Mc Grath was back for the kick off and claimed the ball to take a great run into the Westport half again putting position back to O Donnell where he headed again for the line fending of several wesport tacklers before notching up try number two. Again the conversion dropped short from the boot of Evan Mc Grath’. Continue reading ‘Under 14s Continue to Impress’

Under 14s overpower Ballina

Sligo RFC 41 :: Ballina 7

Sligo under 14 took to the field on Sunday against Ballina in their 3rd league match this season. The opening fifteen minutes of the game saw the possession swing from side to side with no points on the board for either side. A penalty from Evan Mc Grath from a difficult angle slipped away from the posts not helped by a strong breeze that made conditions tough on a very sticky pitch. The kick off from Ballina gladly landed in the hands of Ryan Bright which was worked through the oppositions defence and finished off in a well deserved try by Sligo’s captain Darren Byrne. Evan Mc Grath converted to give Sligo lads the boost that was badly needed to get their confidence back in the game. Heads were up and try’s came rolling in from Daniel Ford, which was well back up by superb rucking from the four power houses Jake Sexton, Ryan Bright, Elyassa Hamza, and Conan O’Donnell. U14s defeat Dunmore

Dunmore 5 :: Sligo RFC 31

Sligo under 14 kicked of their campaign this weekend with a strong performance against Dunmore of Galway. The first half saw the first try go over the line in the first 5 minutes from Darragh Byrne. Evan McGrath ran another try’ within 15 minutes in to the game. Sligo pack battled hard with strong performances from Ryan Bright and Ronan Redmond pushing the Dunmore team back into their own half. As pressure was piled on Dunmore were forced to kick to gain breathing space but the ball was only to land into the safe hand of Sligo’s captain Darren Harte who had an outstanding match. Daniel Ford and Diarmiud Mulligan pushed the Dunmore players on to the back foot with some fantastic ball work that lead to another try from Conan O’Donell. Sligo’s defence was put under pressure for the dying moments of the first half but good work from Jack Keegan, Ronan Redmond and Enda Clarke kept the Dunmore team from crossing the line. Tough start for U19s

Sligo RFC U19 7 :: Galwegians  35

A new look Sligo XV lost their first league outing on Sunday last in Strandhill.

This season the management have to plan their side with the loss of 3 top players Niall Keneally, Tighe Power and Chris Nairn who have joined the UL Bohs academy in Limerick  and a decision has also been taken to minimise the number of club games for Grammer School senior players who have a full schedule at this time. Sligo U-17’s Grind Out Result

Westport RFC 8 :: Sligo RFC 10

Persistent rain through the night and early morning resulted in very slippery conditions for Sligo’s third outing in the U-17 League. Last season both the U15 and U16 teams travelled to Westport and conceded league points. However, there was a palpable resolve in the Sligo camp to prevent a recurrence in this season’s campaign.

The conditions made it difficult for players to settle into the game and the opening minutes same handling errors on both sides. A dream start for the visitors seemed on the way when, five minutes into game, Sligo recycled possession a number of times and sent Diarmuid O’Dowd Hill powering towards the line with out-half Michael Martin and winger David Burke in support. David received the ball 10 metres from the line and crossed over for a touchdown but play was called back for an infringement. Youth Results

SLIGO U17s 70 :: Creggs U17s 0

A revised format for  Youth’s Rugby sees a new U-17 competition allowing Sligo RFC to draw players from two squads, one that contested last year’s U-16 Cup Final and the other, the U-16 Plate Final.
In the opening exchanges there was early indication that this would be a one-sided  affair with Creggs fielding a side that was depleted through injury. Continue reading ‘Youth Results’
