The atmosphere in the stadium just prior to kick-off was reminiscent of Croke Park on February 24th, when Ireland defeated England. Following Ireland’s Call [not the most inspirational call to arms], and the full blooded singing by the French of the La Marseillaise, there was an impromptu rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann, which raised the follicles on the visiting supporters’ necks, as the teams prepared for the action.

There has been a lot of negative criticism of Ireland in this World Cup campaign, and the writer of these notes has no intention of joining these ranks. The team certainly has not played to its potential, but hopefully, with their backs to the wall, they will confound these critics on Saturday next. Despite the disappointment of the result in Paris, post match celebrations were not muted, as the Irish [and Sligo] supporters proceeded to enjoy the cuisine and beverages of this magnificent city.

Sligo’s U-13′s will have a great opportunity to gauge their standard, as they have been invited to play in the special invitation Pat Lawler Tournament at the U.L. campus grounds on Saturday September 15th. The tournament commemorates the late Pat Lawler [father of Munster squad member,Mossie], a former under-age coach with the UL Bohemians club, and is regarded as the unofficial all-Ireland for this age group, as the top clubs in the four provinces will be in action. Last season [more] Sligo impressed the large attendance in Thomond Park, when they qualified for the final, and in the process defeated the legendary Shannon club, and also the hosts, ULBohs. The current U-13′s are coached by Michael O’Hehir, and can be relied on to perform well. As the action commences at 11 am on the 15th, it is likely that the squad will overnight in Limerick on Friday September 14th. Full details from Michael O’Hehir or from Youth Chairman, John Davey.
