Take Me Out

Sligo Rugby Club ladies team certainly showed their organizational skills off the pitch on Friday night as the much anticipated Take Me Out show took place. This could certainly turn into an annual show and with over 400 audience members the anticipation was rising as Scruffy Duffy took to the stage to welcome 20 ladies onto the platform to start the show.

With 7 men looking for love it was certainly going to be an entertaining evening for the event in the Sligo Park Hotel and they audience were not disappointed. All the men were dressed by EJ Menswear and they certainly looked the part. The party pieces were somewhat questionable as Irish Dancing, Singing & Cocktail making were the best the lads could do, although with over 400 people watching it could have gone downhill very quickly. Thankfully almost all of the men selected a date to which they all went to McHughs after the show to see if they could really Take them out!

The night was a huge success thanks to the organizing team led by Grainne Blount & the ladies rugby team. The organizing committee would like to thank all of the sponsors who helped make it a night to remember.

Guess the score Winner!

Winner of the Guess the Score V Connacht game was won by Roger Burrows from Strandhill who will receive 2 tickets to Ireland V Scotland match. Thank you to everyone for their generous support with this fundraising event.

U15s have useful pre cup run out

Sligo under 15s travelled to Longford for a friendly on Saturday to be worthwhile run out where everybody got a game prior to our 1st round of the cup which starts next Sunday away to Dunmore. This is the beginning to the business end of the season with our league final in 2 weeks against Castlebar which will be a tight match

U17s get big cup win

Under 17

Sligo under 17s hit a high note last Sunday with a solid win over
Ballinrobe at home. This win came after a disappointing loss to
Wegans of Galway in the league semi final last Sunday but the recovery was to yield 56 points to 5 win for the home team. The Sligo team ran in its first try after 10 minutes in the game when Mark Gerrity hit the line for the first score of the game .This onslaught was to continue with further trys from Lee Dunne, Stephen Kearns and Joe Conway and it looked like Ballinrobe were finding the physicality of the Sligo pack difficult to deal with. The scrum became an ultimate weapon in the destruction of the visitors as Moran, O Donell and
Jedrick were impossible to handle, and this resulted in several
turnover balls which ultimately led to more scores on the board.
At half time Sligo cleaned the team sheet and with agreement with the visitors they changed 9 of the starting panel the introduction of players such as John Barkley ,Diarmiud Hough ,Luke Morrison, Darren Harte , Jack Tillion did not change the fortunes for Ballinrobe as the Sligo lads continued to rank up the scores. Merve Carter leads the
charge in the dying minutes of the game and with some quick ball from Ronan Redmond to the power house Ryan Bright the line was in sight and the offload to Darragh Byrne finished the game with a fine score under the posts. The game left the visitors with little to offer on the dayas Sligo proved too strong of an opposition.

Cashel too strong for Sligo!

Sligo 6
Cashel 18

Table topping Cashel RFC came to Hamilton Park with an unbeaten record and showed their class with an 18 point to 6 victory over a hardworking Sligo on Saturday. Cashel’s superior physicality proved too strong for a brave Sligo side who carried the battle to their visitors right to the final whistle.

With heavy morning rain causing difficult underfoot conditions it was the visitors who kicked off and immediately put their hosts under pressure. The early pressure was rewarded three minutes in with a well struck penalty from centre Colin Morrissey.

The Cashel number 12 repeated the dose after 13 minutes when his side were rewarded with another penalty for a ruck infringement. Sligo’s Shane Mc Guinness was shown the yellow card and was sent from play for 10 minutes.

The munster men upped the intensity and tried to use their numerical advantage to full effect. A sweeping move from right to left looked  set to reap the full reward but a massive Cathal Finneran tackle forced the turnover and the danger was averted.

Sligo’s line was finally breached after 30 mins when following a line out catch and drive inside the Sligo 22 prop forward Horward Stanley touched down. To move his teams total to 11. Morrissey added the extras.

5 minutes from half time Cashel went further ahead when Ed Leamy, brother of Irish international Dennis, crashed over in the corner following some fine off-loading play by the visitors.

Sligo started the second half in determined fashion and began to take the game to their hosts. James Wilson and Peter Mullan were successfully competing from touch, Jamie Bowes was carrying powerfully and Rory Kerins and Aidan Mc Nulty were making inroads at the breakdown. Matele Fifita’s powerful running was causing concern for Cashel and Hugo Lafitte’s pace was always a threat.

A Daniel Hawkins penalty after 50 minutes put Sligo on the scoreboard and this was added to by a monster drop goal from David Gerrity 10 minutes later.
Both sides created chances in the final quarter, but defences were on top and when the final whistle was blown the score read 6-18 in favour of the visitors.

Next up Sligo Tavel north to second placed Banbridge. The match takes place on Saturday 18th of February and Sligo will be hoping to gather a big travelling support for the day.
