St. Stephen’s Day – Town V’s County match

Over the Christmas break the most important event in Sligo RFCs calendar is  the much anticipated Town V Country match. The match, traditionally held on St Stephens day, is always a fiercely contested affair played out between two teams made up from players with residential or family connections from inside or outside of the Sligo borough boundary.

Any rugby playing Christmas visitors to Sligo, or ex club players, are always welcome to play in the now legendary match, which gives everyone an ideal opportunity to meet old friends whilst also working off the Christmas indulgences.

The Town team have had the edge over the last few seasons, but with the potential talent available to the country team, it is very difficult to call a winner in this years match.

The game kicks off at 2.30 at the clubhouse at Hamilton park. All players must meet at the club at 1.00pm

The after match of the Town v County match is always a huge social occasion and this year will be no different with ex players travelling from as far away as Australia and New Zealand to meet their previous club mates.

A new initiative by Sligo RFC will see this  years event preceded by an U19 Town v County match ,with the winners lifting a trophy sponsored by The Belfry Bar, and judging by the talent available at this age group, a fantastic day of rugby is in store!

Seconds lose out by smallest margin

Sligo 5
Dunmore 6

Sligo’s bid to make it six wins in a row in the Connacht Junior league division 1C fell short by the narrowest of margins with a 1 point defeat to Dunmore RFC at Hamilton park on Sunday.
An Andrew Williams try, following a fine break by Stuart O’Brian was outdone by two well struck Dunmore penalties.

Despite the low score the game was a highly entertaining affair. Sligo’s scrum was solid with prop forwards Aaron Tansey and Brian Kane providing a good platform. Hooker Nick Ryan combined well with second rows Kieran Meehan and Dermot Kiely at the line out. Sligo’s hardworking back row of Williams, Terrence O’Connor and Sean Glackin contained Dunmores pick and drive game.

O’Brian and Stephen Butler combined well at half back. Centres Brandon Harvey and Clive Morris combined well throughout and wingers Brian Mullan and Gary Boland showed excellent pace when brought into the play. Full Back Dermot O’ Connor plied his trade well. subs Martin Feeney and Colm Keane made telling contributions when they joined the fray.

Sligo now take a break from competitive action until they play in the Connacht Junior cup on the 21st of January. Sligo have been drawn at home against the winners of loughrea v Portumna in what should be a competitive encounter.

More last minute agony for Sligo

Sligo 18
Rainey Old Boys 20

Sligo suffered the heartbreak of another late defeat when the concession of an injury time try saw a three point lead switch to a two point deficit in their latest Ulster Bank League match on Saturday.

Prior to the kick off at Strandhill, Sligo’s visitors, Rainey Old boys, held second position in the division 2A table and had won all but one of their previous seven league matches this season. Despite this daunting statistic Sligo entered the game in confident form having won their previous two matches on the road.

In bitterly cold conditions and with the aid of a strong breeze blowing from the mountain end, it was the visitors who made the better start. With only a minute gone on the clock Rainey stunned the home side. A penalty outside the Sligo 22 was quickly moved to flanker Paul Heaney who took advantage of some weak Sligo tackling and raced through the defence to open his teams account. Gary Martin added the extras.

Sligo settled into the game and their strong driving play, with Jamie Bowes particularly prominent, began to yield reward. With twenty minutes gone on the clock Full back Daniel Hawkins opened Sligo’s account with a well struck penalty from the Rainey 22 metre line following an infringement at the scrum.

Rainey struck again on the half hour. Following a scrum on the half way line the ball was moved right. Full back Rodney Paul joined the line and created the overlap, which allowed Andrew Cambell the space to beat the cover and touch down wide on the right. Martins conversion fell short to leave the half time score at 12-3 in favour of the visitors.

Sligo kicked off the second half in determined fashion and soon put pressure on their hosts. Good use of the breeze allowed Sligo set up field position inside the Rainey 22. Quick use of possession from a scrum allowed Mark Butler the chance to attack the Rainey defence and the out half stepped inside the cover and touched down to the right of the posts. Hawkins converted to move his team to within two points. unfortunately for the home team Butler injured his shoulder in the act of scoring and had to retire immediately.

Ten minutes into the half Sligo took the lead for the first time with another Hawkins penalty following an infringement at the ruck. This lead was short lived however as Rainey hit back with a Martin Penalty following the sinbinning of Gavin Foley for playing the ball on the floor. Despite being reduced to 14 Sligo continued to battle and jumped back into the lead again with an excellently taken score.

A scrum ball on the 10 metre line was carried by Aidan Mc Nulty, Bowes carried on the drive before a ruck was setup on the 22. The play was switched left and Paddy Pearson drew the cover before releasing the fleet footed Hugo Lafite and the winger raced to the corner to push the score to 18-15 in favour of Sligo.

Sligo were in front but their success was coming at a cost, Butler, prop forwards David Rowe, Shane Mc Guinness and Adrian Mc Hale and scrum half Pearson all had to retire with injuries. Because of the injuries to the front row players the referee had to call for uncontested scrums and Sligo’s previous dominance in this area was negated.

With the game in injury time the visitors were awarded a penalty on the Sligo 22. Most observers thought a draw was on the cards but Rainey had other plans and opted for the scrum. From the scrum the ball was shifted wide and Paul Wilson was given the space to crash over in the corner and put his team back in front.

Sligo gamely competed at the kick off but Rainey kept possession and their clearance kick was the final act of the match.

Sligo win at the Aviva

Wanderers RFC 5
Sligo RFC             14

Sligo travelled to the home of Irish Rugby and picked up their second consecutive Ulster Bank League win when they defeated Wanderers RFC on the back pitch of the Aviva stadium on Saturday.
The well deserved win pushes Sligo up to 11th place in the league table with one fixture remaining before the Christmas break.
The home team kicked off on the synthetic pitch with the aid of the strong breeze and their familiarity with the Astro turf surface was immediately evident as they spun the ball wide at every opportunity in the opening exchanges. Wanderers early enterprise forced Sligo into the concession of a series of penalties but the visitors were relieved to see 3 Stephen Malone efforts fail to hit the target.
The Sligo pack settled  into their task and the front row of David Rowe, Ross Mannion and Shane Mc Guinness soon had the upper hand at scrum time and Paddy Conlon and James Wilson were comfortably securing good line out possession.
The westerners opening score arrived after 19 minutes. Following a Scrum on  the Sligo 10 metre line Number 8 Aidan Mc Nulty combined with Paddy Pearson. Pearson released winger David Gerrity  who made his way into the home 22. The ball was recycled twice before the referee deemed that the home defence had strayed offside at the ruck. Full back Daniel Hawkins stepped up and bisected the posts with a well struck effort.
Malone and Hawkins then both missed with penalty efforts before the referee blew for the half time break.
The second half began with Sligo in the ascendancy, Jamie Bowes was carrying powerfully and replacement Thomas Ferrari added dynamism to Sligo’s driving game.
7 minutes into the half Sligo doubled their tally with an excellently struck  Mark Butler penalty from 3 metres inside his own half.
Wanderers response was swift and some fine handling resulted in James Ritchie receiving wide on the right. The winger chipped ahead and beat the Sligo defence to collect and touch down in the corner. Malone’s conversion drifted wide.
Sligo were stung back into life, a Hugo Lafitte break was stopped in the home   22 . Conlon and Ferrari were both involved before Butler stepped up and popped over an excellently struck drop goal.
With 10 minutes remaining Sligo struck the killer blow. More fine Bowes driving earned a penalty 5 yards from the host teams try line. Sligo opted for a scrum and a well controlled heel allowed Mc Nulty the opportunity to pick and the number 8 made no mistake in crashing over in the corner. Hawkins conversion effort drifted wide of the upright.
Wanderers again countered and tried to utilise their pacey back line. Their enterprise looked sure to gain reward when a flowing move created an overlap wide on the right but Lafiitte stepped in and managed to get a touch on the pass causing the move to break down. The referee deemed Lafitte’s intervention illegal and the winger was shown the yellow card. Despite this setback Sligo’s defence remained firm and when the referee blew the long blast it was the large visiting support that cheered loudest

Rainey Old Boys come to town

Next week Sligo play host to Rainey Old Boys in their final Ulster Bank League fixture of 2011. A third win in a row would put Sligo in a very comfortable position prior to the Christmas break. Rainey will provide a stern  challenge as the northern outfit have won 6 out of their first 7 league matches and currently lie second in the table. However, their first loss arrived at home to Banbridge last Saturday and Sligo will be hoping that they can capitalise on this drop in form.

Scrumptious Christmas Disco

Sligo RFC’s fully supervised non-alcoholic Christmas teenage disco will take place at the clubhouse on Thursday 22nd of December. Tickets are now on sale from the usual sellers.

2nds continue to shine

Monivea 8
Sligo.       17

Sligo continued their excellent J1C form with a fine victory over a strong Monivea outfit at the Castle grounds on Sunday. The visitors scored 3 tries to the locals solitary effort on their way to a well worked win.
Sligo’s success  was layed down by a powerful display up front from the pack coupled with excellent use of their pacey back line.
The front row of Aaron Tansey, Nick Ryan and Brian Keane anchored a powerful scrum, and Darran Wilson slotted in seamlessly when called upon. Kieran Meehan and Dermot Kiely ensured a plentiful supply of line out ball and replacements Kieran Stafford and Michael Mc Morrow made telling impacts when they joined the fray. The back row of James Fox, Terrence O’Connor and Leigh Fenton won the battle at the breakdown.
The half backs of Stuart O’Brian and Stephen Butler controlled the game with O’Brian picking up Sligo’s opening try and Butler added to the tally with a well struck penalty. The centre partnership of Clive Morris and Brandon Harvey caused their opposite numbers problems in attack and defence and Morris added to his teams total with two well struck conversions. The pace of Sligo’s back three of Brian Mullan, Sean Bagnall and Dermott O’Connor proved to much for the home defence with Mullan racing in for his teams second try. Kevin Donegan and Andy Mulligan demonstrated the strength of the squad when joining the play.
Sligo’s next league outing is on the 11th of December in Strandhill against table topping Dunmore, who are ahead of Sligo by a single point. On current form coach Steve Alley will be confident his charges will be capable overcoming the Galway outfit.

Sligo take maximum points in Naas

Naas RFC 13
Sligo RFC 30

Sligo’s quest for their elusive first Ulster Bank league win finally came to fruition with a well deserved bonus point win over Leinster rivals Naas RFC at Forenoughts on Saturday. Sligo’s forward dominance combined with a match controlling performance by half backs Paddy Pearson and Mark Butler ensured that maximum points were earned on the trip to the eastern province.
Sligo kicked off playing into the stiff breeze but it was the home team who took the early initiative and put Sligo under pressure in the opening exchanges. Good use of the wind ensured field position for the home team and after seven minutes a sustained period of pressure allowed centre Donal Droney the chance to break through the Sligo cover and dot down left of the posts. Out half Dave Ahern added the extras with a well struck conversion.
Despite this setback Sligo stuck to their task and worked their way back into the game. Aidan Mc Nulty and Paddy Conlon began to make inroads into the opposition defence and Pearson and Butlers ability in open play opened up gaps in the home defence.
Sligo’s opening score arrived on 25 minutes. Open field running by exciting full back Daniel Hawkins allowed Pearson the chance to break. The scrum half linked with Matele Fifita and the powerhouse centre made no mistake in touching down for his teams first score.Hawkins’ conversion attempt drifted narrowly wide.
Sligo pushed on and their enterprise was rewarded with a second try on the half hour. Fine work by David Gerrity earned a penalty on the home 10 metre line. Butler kicked to the corner and second row James Wilson secured the resulting line out. The ball was moved midfield and Sligo’s forwards, with Jamie Bowes prominent, drove towards the home line. Good ball retention allowed Butler the opportunity to step inside the cover and dot down to double his teams total. Hawkins added the conversion with a well struck effort.
Naas hit back with a penalty from the Sligo 22 following a poor Sligo clearance to move the half time score to 12-10 in favour of the visitors.
Sligo took the initiative for the beginning of the second half and good use of the wind by Pearson and Butler ensured field position for their team. This pressure was rewarded with a penalty after 14 minutes which resulted in the sin binning of Naas’ Andrew Shirley for persistent infringements. Hawkins’ kick pushed Sligo 15-10 ahead. Naas replied with another Ahern penalty but it proved the last shot in anger from the home outfit as Sligo stepped up and dominated the final quarter.
Hawkins cancelled out Aherns effort with a well struck effort from inside the 10 metre line as Sligo upped the pressure on their hosts.
Try number three arrived with 10 minutes left on the clock. A Paddy Pearson cross kick was almost collected by Gerrity and from the resulting scrum Sligo reclaimed the ball and drove towards the Naas line. A number of recycles were carried out before the ball was moved to Butler and the out half again stepped inside the cover to touch down for his second and his sides third of the day. Hawkins converted with a well measured strike.
The 4 try bonus point was within reach and Sligo were determined to take full advantage. More good work by the pack positioned Sligo in the Naas Half and a well judged cross kick by Butler was collected by Pearson allowing the scrum half the space to race past the cover to score wide on the right. Hawkins was unsuccessful with the conversion effort right on the stroke of full time.
The bonus point win was just reward for Sligo and their supporters and Coach Simon Galvan will be now be looking ahead with optimism for the next matches in their Ulster Bank league campaign.
Next Saturday Sligo travel to the Aviva Stadium where they take on Wanderers RFC. The match will take place on the back pitch in the stadium and will kick off at 2.30

Sligo ladies make it two from two!

The Sligo women’s rugby team continued their excellent start to the season when they made it two wins from two games with a well deserved victory over a strong Tuam outfit at Garraun park in Tuam under floodlights last Wednesday evening.
In ideal conditions for running rugby it was the visitors who started best. Sligo’s mobile pack kept the ball alive at every opportunity and their all action game soon began to make space for their lively back line. Scrum Half Lauren Mc Gee was dictating from the base and quick ball allowed powerhouse centre Jacqui Mulligan demonstrate her superb footballing ability to race in for the opening score. Jackie Carraway made no mistake with a well judged conversion.
Sligo were now in full flow and the hard work of forwards Niamh Connolly, Keara Kilfeather and Lisa Moore ensured go forward ball allowing the excellent Mulligan to double her and her teams tally with another superb try. Carraway again added the extras with a well struck kick
Sligo’s all action game continued to pose problems for their hosts and a mazy run from the speedy Leona Moran allowed the speedster the space to break the defence and touch down for Sligo’s third try. Caraway again converted.
Sligo continued to press and added a fourth try when team captain Laura Feehily took the ball from a tapped penalty and burst through the cover to touch down.
On the stroke of half time Sligo put the game out of sight. Centre Grainne Blount burst through the cover and despite being tackled short of the line, off loaded to the supporting Connolly whonmade no mistake in adding to her teams total.
The half time break suited the home team and Tuam made the most of the interval to rework their game plan. A more forward orientated game in the second half put pressure on the Sligo outfit but Sligo’s early foundations ensured they left the pitch on the right side of a 33-19 scoreline.
Sligo are now unbeaten on the top of the Connacht Women’s Development League and their all action off-loading game should ensure that they are in the hunt for league honours at the end of the season.
