There was a very large attendance at the AGM of Sligo RFC, which was held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Friday last. Outgoing Hon. Secretary, Michael Storey, reported on a very successful season for the club at underage level and paid tribute to the 2nd Team, of which he was manager, for their spirited performances. Michael, who did not seek re- election, was acclaimed by the meeting for his work in many capacities on behalf of the club. Continue reading ‘Large Attendance At AGM’
The AGM of Sligo RFC will be held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Friday next, May 16th at 8 pm. The meeting will report on a hectic season, both on and off the playing field.
It is probably appropriate, given the ever increasing Juvenile and Youth membership in the club, that these two sections provided the season’s highlights, with the U-12 team winning the Connacht blitz, the U-13 team winning the Connacht Cup, and the U-14’s winning the Connacht Cup also. The U-18 team were victorious in the Connacht league. The club was honoured by the selection of 16 year old Aaron Spring on the Ireland Youth [U-18] side, and by the selection of Aaron, Rory Kerins and Tadgh Power on Connacht squads.
There will be a number of changes at the helm for the coming season. Outgoing President, Tom Gilligan, after two years in office, is stepping down, while current Hon. Secretary, Michael Storey, is also taking a well deserved break after three years in this position. Hon. Treasurer, Jimmy Staunton is another who is not seeking re-election, so there will be a number of new faces at the top table. Last season’s club captain, Jamie Livingstone, has returned to his native New Zealand, so there will also be a newcomer to fill this position.
All fully paid up members are entitled to attend the AGM, and given the record membership in the club at present, a very big attendance is anticipated.
The AGM of Sligo RFC will be held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Friday May 16th at 8 pm. Prior to the commencement of the meeting [at 7.30 pm] the club’s Football Development Plan [2008-2013] will be launched by the President. At the AGM the new Club Constitution, which has been drafted by a Sub-Committee of Eamonn McGowan, Joe Burgess and Aidan Buckley, will be presented for adoption. There is certain to be a number of new faces at the helm next season, as the President, Tom Gilligan, after two years in office, Hon Secretary, Michael Storey, after three years in this position, and Hon Treasurer, Jimmy Staunton, after four years of service, are not seeking re-election. All fully paid up members are entitled to attend the AGM.
Arrangements are now finalised for the social highlight of the year in the club, the Annual Club Dinner, which will be held in the Sligo Park Hotel on Sunday May 4th, and which this year is being sponsored by AIB. This promises to be a gala occasion, and the special guest speaker, Anthony Foley, truly a living rugby legend, is very much looking forward to his visit to Sligo.
Tickets for the event are now on sale [at 60 euro each], and with numbers being limited by the hotel, early purchase is recommended to avoid disappointment. All bookings must be accompanied by the requisite cash/cheque, and tickets are being sold on a strictly ”first come, first served basis”. Tickets may be obtained from any member of the Organising Committee; Billy Leahy [Chair.] [0872921212], Clare Storey, Mary O’Hehir, Orla Gilligan or Niall Draper [0872598206], or from club President, Tom Gilligan [0866019050].
Among the highlights of the evening will be the presentations by Anthony Foley of the Hall of Fame Award, the Senior Player of the Year, and the Youth Player of the Year, while Senator Geraldine Feeney will present the Frank Feeney Memorial Club Person of the Year Award.
The Annual Dinner Dance will be held in the Sligo Park Hotel on Saturday May 3rd. This year’s event is being very generously sponsored by AIB, and it promises to be a gala occasion. The club President, Tom Gilligan, has already engaged a very famous rugby personality as the main after dinner speaker. To organise the event, the following Sub-Committee has been appointed by the President; Billy Leahy [Chair.], Clare Storey, Mary O’Hehir, Therese Cosgrove, Orla Gilligan and Niall Draper.
The mid-night oil is certainly being burned by the special Sub-Committee of three former club Presidents, Eamonn McGowan [Chair.], Joe Burgess and Aidan Buckley who have the onerous task of reviewing the club’s constitution, and proposing amendments where appropriate. Their work to date, which commenced in November, will be discussed at the March monthly meeting, and it is probable that the new constitution will be presented at the AGM in May for ratification by the members.
