All Ireland Dream Over!

Crosshaven RFC 6 :: Sligo RFC 5

Sligo’s dream of All Ireland glory came to an end in the cruellest of manners when they went down by a single point to Crosshaven at Myrtleville on Saturday in the semi final of the all Ireland junior cup. Sligo lead by two points with two minutes remaining on the clock but a well taken Liam Delaney drop goal secured the win for the home side.

With a howling gale blowing down the pitch the match was always going to be a battle of the forward packs. Sligo played the first half with the favour of the breeze but Crosshaven started well with their strong forward pack causing Sligo to concede some early penalties. As the game went on Sligo settled into their own pattern and began to pressure their hosts. The first scoring opportunity fell to Sligo in the form of a Mark Butler penalty on the 10 metre line but the wind made kicking extremely tricky and the outhalfs attempt was pushed wide of the posts. Sligo continued to press and were eventually rewarded with a Jordan Farrington try. A James Wison lineout take was taken down and driven towards the line by the Sligo pack.  A series of pick and drives were stopped short before the ball was moved right to Mata Fifita. The centre timed his pass perfectly to give Farrington the chance to dot down ten metres in from touch.

Butler was narrowly wide with the difficult conversion attempt. Sligo looked to increase their tally before half time but their cause was not helped with the sin binning of scrum half and team captain Paddy Pearson for a high tackle five minutes before the break. However, to a man Sligo raised their game and the score remained the same until Pearsons return.

Crosshaven kicked off the second half and immediately used the now strengthening gale to gain field position. Kicking out of defence was impossible so Sligo had to keep the ball in hand to make their way up the park. The Sligo pack, with the outstanding Paddy Conlon leading the charge continually drove up the pitch to keep Crosshaven at bay.  Adrian Mc Hale , Jamie Bowes and Fifita all carried well and trademark tackling from Gavin Foley and Cathal Culhane constantly frustrated the visitors.

Crosshaven narrowed the gap to two points twelve minutes into the half when a Liam Delaney drop goal effort was awarded by the referee.  The ball appeared to have drifted wide of the left upright but the referee raised his arm and to the dismay of the visitors the score stood.

Sligo continued to up the work rate and were gaining ascendancy in the scrum and hooker Ross Mannion was linking well with Wilson  and Peter Mullan in the line out. The pick and drive game was continually pushing the visitors back and the back three of David Gerrity, Aaron Spring and Farrington were fielding well and running back at their hosts at every opportunity.

The game was at a knife edge but Sligo were the team in control. Dynamic prop forward Wesley Maxwell had to retire with an injured shoulder but his replacement Martin Feeney scrummaged superbly and ensured that Sligo continued to dominate.

With three minutes remaining Crosshaven were awarded a controversial penalty for feet up at a scrum inside their own half. The ball was kicked deep into the Sligo half and from the resulting lineout Delaney was given field position in front of the posts allowing the outhalf the chance to bisect the posts for the winning score.

Time had run out for the visitors and two minutes later the ref blew the final whistle which signalled heartbreak for Sligo and their large travelling support.

Women advance to plate semi-final

Sligo 53 :: Ballymoney 26

The Sligo womens team advanced to the semi-final of the Ulster plate in a high scoring 53-26 battle with Ballymoney at Strandhill on Sunday. Sligos all action game led by big performances from Jackie Carraway, Laura Feeney, Michelle Byrne and Ruth Goodwin was too powerful for their northern visitors. Sligo now meet Ballyshannon Women in the semi final and a similar performance could see them advance to the final in their inaugural season.

U17s suffer final defeat

Galwegians RFC 9 :: Sligo RFC 3

The Sligo U17s suffered the heartbreak of a final defeat when the lost out in the Connacht U17 league decider at the sportsground in Galway on Sunday.  Galwegian’s kicked three penalties to Sligo’s solitary effort in a closely fought battle that was in the balance right to the final whistle.

Galwegian’s started brightly and looked to bring their pacey backline into the game as quickly as possible. Sligos’s defence remained firm and big tackles from James O Hehir and Mark Gerrity ensured the early threat was snuffed out .
Then it was Sligo’s turn to attack and the pack with Eddie Connell and Diarmuid O Dowd-Hill prominent were gaining inroads into the blues territory. A promising move put together by Sligo in the tenth minute looked set to gain a reward but a loose pass was intercepted by Gawegians and only a superb chase and cover tackle by winger Enda Roche kept the Sligo line intact. From the ensuing ruck Sligo were penalised and ‘Wegians used the opportunity to open their account with a well struck penalty.

Sligo responded and some astute kicking by outhalf Enda Gavin gave them field position in the ‘wegians half. Pressure at the breakdown resulted in a penalty award and Full back Colm Egan made no mistake with a well judged effort to equalise, putting the scoreline at three all at the break.

The second half began with Sligo on the attack but their pick and dive game was well defended by the Galway outfit and no reward was gained for the packs endeavours. Galwegians went took the lead midway through the half with a well struck penalty and further increased their lead with a drop goal with fifteen minutes remaining. Sligo were stung into action and good play by the pack gave outhalf Enda Gavin the opportunity to position his team in the ‘wegians 22. A planned line out move almost resulted in a try but the ‘Wegians defence held firm.

Sligo continued to hunt for the all important try and with time almost up on the clock were awarded a series of penalties close to the ‘wegians line.  The forwards drove over the line three times but incredibly the referee was unsighted on each occasion and did not award the try to Sligo.

Sligo Colm Egan, Sean Finnegan, Jason Mc Goldrick, Mark Gerrity, Enda Roche, Enda Gavin, Ross Gordon, Fabian Zawada, Matt Davey, Jamie Mc Govern, Niall O Rourke, Shane Boyle, Diarmuid o Dowd-Hill, James O Hehir, Eddie Connell. Reps Conor Kerins for Gordon, Daragh Burke for Egan, Patrick Saba for Davey.

Sligo take one step closer to AIL glory

Ballina RFC 0

Sligo RFC 11

On Sunday last in Ballina Sligo passed another huge examination in their quest for Connacht glory when they defeated Ballina 11  nil in Heffernan Park. This has been a graveyard for many a Sligo team over the years but on this occasion Sligo showed why they are the best Junior team in Connacht.

This was a very mature performance against a very good side. Sligo bossed this game from start to finish and could have had several scores were it not for excellent last ditch defence from Ballina.

What made this result so great was that the team knew all they had to do was win and coach Simon Galvan has to be lauded for the tactics on the day. Gone was the open fancy rugby to be replaced by pragmatism. No loose passes or throwing it wide for the sake of it , Sligo got stuck in and simply demolished the Ballina forward unit.

Sligo’s success this season has been based on a fifteen man game with the backs totally dominant. On this occasion the forwards and the half backs were asked to step up and they responded in spades.

For the first 15 minutes it was all Ballina but despite their dominance they had very little to show for it as Sligo defended superbly. Having defended for that opening spell Sligo went on the offensive.   A great move from right to left saw Jordan Farrington sail in for a try. For the rest of the half Sligo kept Ballina pinned in their half. This tactic proved very fruitful as a penalty offense was punished just before the break to push Sligo in front 8, nil.

 The second half saw Sligo dominating territory and possession in a very tense battle but Sligo were always in control and a further penalty by Mark Butler put them 11 nil ahead. Sligo was in no mood to give anything away and that was the final score of another epic battle.

Without a doubt this is the best Sligo team ever seen in the last thirty years or maybe ever. On Sunday their forwards to a man were magnificent. Their front row of Wesley Maxwell, Ross Mannion and Adrian McHale were simply awesome with Maxwells scrummaging just superb. Wilson and Bowes, as they have been all season, just exuded physicality. The back row again were super against very good opponents and for Cathal Culhane this will banish those bad memories against Westport in the play offs a few years ago. He was just so good on the day showing all his experience.

 All season Sligo backs have been amazing- scoring close to ninety trys in all competitions and a huge part comes down to their brilliant half backs Paddy Pearson and Mark Butler. On the day against Mick Murphy and Kiwi Corey Brown they directed operations with great skill and intelligence. Outside them Mata Fifita and Gavin Foley were just superb with veteran Foley having the game of the year. Gavin put in some amazing tackles to stymey what is a very good Ballina back line. The back three of Spring, Farrington and the impeccable David Gerrity put in a great days work to round off a fantastic team effort.

Sligo now have one hand on the Connacht League trophy and it is unlikely they slip up at home in two weeks time against Castlebar. However before that game they have a very important assignment against Crosshaven next Saturday in the All Ireland Junior Cup semi final.

Seniors make history

Sligo RFC 24 :: City of Armagh 21

History was created at Hamilton park on Saturday when Sligo defeated Armagh to take their place in the semi final of the all Ireland junior cup for the first time since the inception of the competition.

Sligo’s will to win and determined approach won out against last years beaten finalists in the country’s premier junior club competition.

Armagh won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the slight breeze in the first half. This advantage was rewarded 2 minutes into the game when a penalty award on the home 22 was easily dispatched by the visitors to open their account.

Sligo restarted and immediately attacked their hosts. Some super pressure, in particular by Cathal Culhane and Paddy Conlon resulted in a penalty award inside the Armagh 22 and the excellent Mark Butler made no mistake with the kick to level the scores.

The restart from Armagh was poorly dealt with by the home team and the northern outfit wasted no team in regaining the initiative. A speculative chip through was recovered by the visiting chasers and crisp passing yielded a try in the corner to put 5 points between the teams. Continue reading ‘Seniors make history’

Sligo make it 3 wins from 3 in U-14 League

Sligo RFC 50 :: Castlebar RFC 5

Last Sunday,Sligo took on and defeated Mayo rivals Castlebar in the Northern division of the U14 Connaught League by a massive margin to cement their position at the top of the table.  Sligo came out with all guns blazing to impress with an 8-try blitz over their visitors.

The powerful Sligo forward pack dominated the set pieces and worked well as a unit to win a great number of turnovers in the rucks and mauls.
The quality possession provided by the pack was put to good use by the well organised Sligo backline who used great width and speed to out run Castlebar. Continue reading ‘Sligo make it 3 wins from 3 in U-14 League’

Seniors advance in Cawley cup

Sligo RFC 24 :: Castlebar RFC 12

Sligo gained revenge for last seasons Cawley cup final defeat when they toppled holders Castlebar in their first round encounter at Hamilton Park on Sunday.

In ideal conditions for running rugby Sligo scored three trys without reply on their way to a hard fought victory. Castlebar kicked off and were quickest to settle with some well judged tactical kicking giving them a foothold in Sligo territory. Sligo were penalised for an infringement at the ruck and Castlebars Robbie Cusack made no mistake with the resulting kick to give his side an early advantage. Seconds defeated in Ballina

Sligo’s second 15 went down by three points in an ill tempered league encounter at Creggs road in Ballina on Sunday. The referee issued a number of yellow cards before sending off Ballina’s full back but Sligo were not able to capitalise on their numerical advantage. A Stephen Kilgallon try and a Brian Hynes penalty yield 8 points for the visitors but it was just not enough and the Mayo sides try and 2 penalties was enough to ensure victory.

Sligo’s cause was not helped by the loss of influential second row Dermot Kiely with a shoulder injury two minutes into the game and all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

Another high score for Sligo

Corrib RFC 17 :: Sligo RFC 52

Sligo’s high scoring Connacht Junior league campaign continued apace with an eight try demolition of Corrib at Headford on Sunday. Sligo had the 4 try bonus point secured by half time and repeated the dose with four more trys after the interval.

Sligo won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the slight breeze in the first half. The opening minutes were dominated by a kicking duel with Corrib gaining the upper hand in the territory stakes. A well worked back line move saw the Galway outfit take the lead when centre Thomas Lee burst through for an early score which he converted himself. Continue reading ‘Another high score for Sligo’

Sligo win in Tullamore

Tullamore RFC 11 :: Sligo RFC 19

Sligo advanced to the quarter final of the All Ireland junior cup with an eight point defeat of a strong Tullamore outfit at Spollanstown on Saturday.  The visitors outscored the home outfit by three Trys to one on their way to an impressive victory.

In ideal conditions for Rugby the opening minutes were  dominated by tactical kicking, with both teams trying to gain territorial advantage. Tullamore put together the first attack of note on 10 minutes when a sweeping left to right backline move broke down close to the Sligo line when the ball was dropped by winger Colin Hughes. Sligo cleared their lines following the resulting scrum.

The opening score arrived after 20 minutes when Sligo were penalized at the breakdown on their own 22. Outhalf Johnny Maloney slotted the kick to open his teams account. Continue reading ‘Sligo win in Tullamore’

2nd XV share the spoils in Galway

Corinthians RFC J2 20 :: Sligo RFC J2 20

Sligo’s second team fought back from behind to earn a last minute greatly deserved draw against a well organised Corinthians outfit in Galway on Sunday. In their first match of their J2 league campaign a last minute penalty kicked by man of the match Brian Hynes,following great work by prop forward Darran Wilson,earned a richly deserved draw for his side.
Hynes racked up a personal tally of fifteen points as he had already scored a try,2 conversions and an earlier penalty. Steve Kilgallon also chipped in with a well worked try.

Coach Steve Alley and Manager Aaron Tansey will be delighted that their charges earned valuable points against a side that always perform well at this level.

U17′s make it two from two with a great win over Galwegians

Galwegians RFC U17′s – 0 :: Sligo RFC U17′s – 22

Sligo U17s second league match was against a much fancied Galwegians side in Galway.

On a glorious day for rugby. Galwegians exerted much of the early pressure with little end product. Sligo’s aggressive defence was well capable of styfling what Galwegians threw at them. Sligo gradually gained the upper hand in all depatments apart from the scoreboard.

A combination of good forward play and excellent handling skills saw the first and only score of the first half when Enda Roache touched down. The try was not converted to leave the score 5-0 in favour of Sligo.

Sligo started with purpose and had Galwegians pinned deep within their own half. The breakthrough came from quick ball off a scrum when the ball was quickly sprayed out wide to Darragh Burke who touched down in the corner to make the score at 10-0. Sligo dominate ‘port

Sligo RFC     85 :: Westport RFC    0

Sligo’s quest for Connacht junior league glory took another huge step forward when they decimated the challenge of Westport RFC, traditionally a junior league title contender, with an exhibition of complete dominance at Strandhill on Saturday.  The visitors had no answer for Sligo’s all action game as the hosts ran in 13 trys without reply.

The home team dominated from the kick off and registered their first score after  2 minutes when following a set scrum on the Westport 5 metre line, scrum half Paddy Pearson ran a well rehearsed line which culminated in powerful centre Matele Fifita crashing through to open his teams account. Outhalf Mark Butler slotted the conversion to give Sligo the perfect start. Continue reading ‘Sligo dominate ‘port’

Sligo take spoils against ‘Club

OLBC 18

Sligo 22

Sligo won the clash of the table toppers when they defeated Our Lady’s boys club from Galway in a much anticipated Junior League division 1 encounter at the back pitch in the sportsground on Sunday.

OLBC had recruited strongly in the close season and were seen by many to be well equipped to launch a title challenge this season.

Sligo kicked off with the aid of the strong breeze but it was the local outfit who struck first when a penalty award for an infringement at the ruck was despatched by Greg Flaherty to give his side an early advantage.

Sligo reacted and made their way into the ‘club 22. Strong work by Wesley Maxwell at the scrum gave the ref no option but to award the penalty and outhalf Paddy Pearson stepped up and slotted the kick to equalise.

OLBC again came looking for points and earned a penalty in front of the Sligo posts which Flaherty again converted to put his team back in front.

The first try of the match was a superbly crafted individual effort. Following a sweeping left to right movement, the ball was brought into contact by the strong running Matele Fifita. A quick recycle was moved to Pearson who brilliantly changed the angle and wrong footed the defence before racing clear of the cover to dot down to the left of the posts. The outhalf converted to put the score at 10-6 in Sligo’s favour.

‘Club again came storming back and a well rehearsed moved from a 5 metre scrum saw full back Donnacha Carey crash over in the corner to give his side a one point lead into the break.

Sligo upped the tempo in the second half and were starting to edge the possession battle. Hard work was rewarded when pressure on the home defence resulted in a 5 yard scrum award for the north westerners.

A good drive by the pack allowed Paddy Conlon feed Frankie Feeney and the scrum half quickly released the backline. Fifita recieved in midfield and powerfully burst through the cover to touch down beside the posts. Pearson converted  to move the scoreline to 11-17 in favour of the visitors.

Sligo coninued to press and began to move the ball wide where they had an obvious advantage, however over eagerness in this policy proved costly when a loose play was latched onto by OLBC and the ball was hacked down field. The retreating Sligo cover failed to deal with the situation and illegaly prevented the olbc attack,resulting in the concession of a penalty try. Flaherty added the extras to put his team back in to a one point lead.

Sligo regrouped ,went back on the attack, and camped themselves in the ‘club 22.  Fifita’s poweful running was causing the home defence difficulty and following another trademark drive the ball was moved wide to Ted Mulvaney who broke two tackles before crossing the tryline for the final score of the game.

Sligo contiued to press to try to earn the bonus point try, but OLBC were not in the mood to give up and threw everything at the visitors defence. However , Sligo held firm and some great work by Simon Coulter and a fine kick from Aaron Spring ensured that the points were secured.

Next up Sligo face newly promoted Loughrea, on Sunday at Hamilton Park, Strandhill with a 3 o Clock kick off.
