We were all very upset to hear earlier this year that the great indestructible Kerry man, Moss Keane, had been hit with cancer; but of course in his inimitable style, he is fighting and remains immensely cheerful and in great form.

Killester Travel are holding a golf day to celebrate Moss’s career and also to raise some much needed money for the IRFU Charitable Trust and Stuart Mangan Appeal – both charities looking after seriously injured players. We know it is a tough year and because of that we have tailored the competition in a particular way.

Essentially, the event will be Munster v Leinster and will have one celebrity playing for Munster with his partner and another playing for Leinster with his partner, so that essentially the tournament will be a four ball rather than a team event. Paul O’Connell will captain the Munster team and Brian O’Driscoll will captain the Leinster team.

The cost of the day will be €500 (am shotgun) or €600 (pm shotgun) per person to include a round of golf on the Palmer course at the K Club and dinner with a star studded cabaret that night. For those who would like to raise the participation fee by means of sponsorship cards, please contact the Hotline (01-8537950).

You can support the event in various ways and these details are in the enclosed detailed information and booking form. We do hope you will be able in some way to support this great celebration of one of our Rugby Legends and also these worthy charities.

The President of Sligo RFC, Brendan Leahy, and the Chairman of the organising Sub-Committee, Tom Gilligan, on behalf of the Sub-Committee, wish to thank those who supported the table quiz in aid of the Stuart Mangan Trust, held on Tuesday evening last in the Glasshouse Hotel. They also wish to thank all who made financial contributions, and are extremely grateful to the business community for very generously donating prizes for the raffle held on that evening.

The organising Sub-Committee is also indebted to the management of the Glasshouse Hotel for their assistance and professionalism in ensuring that the event ran so smoothly, and was such a huge success, both financially and socially. Many thanks also to the Quiz Master, Cameron Giles, who did his usual superb job, and to Peter Gillespie who set the questions.

All monies raised have been lodged to the Stuart Mangan Trust Fund, and Stuart’s family has responded that they are overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and generosity of the friends and members of the club.

Anyone wishing to make a personal financial contribution may do so by lodging to the Stuart Mangan Trust Account at AIB, Pearse Square, Fermoy, Co. Cork ( Account Number 17569101, Sort Code 93-60-81).

Stuart Mangan is a 25 year old rugby player from Cork who sustained a very serious spinal injury during a game for his club in the UK on April 5th, 2008. He has been left paralysed and will require 24 hour medical care for the rest of his life. You may have seen or heard Keith Wood’s or Paul O’Connell’s radio and television appeals for support for the fund.

Meeting Stuart has inspired me to champion Night Around Tables – a global fundraiser for the Stuart Mangan Appeal. The event will involve people from Sydney to Sligo, New York to Newcastle, Cape Town to Cork, hosting a meal with friends at home for Stuart on one special night across the world – Keith Wood

You can read more about this and other ways to help – check out Stuart’s appeal at www.stuartmangan.org.

In support of the efforts of those in Munster Rugby, Irish and English Rugby and indeed Rugby worldwide to raise funds for Stuart Mangan, the members of Sligo Rugby Club have arranged a table quiz to be held in The Glasshouse Hotel on Tuesday May 26th 2009 at 8pm. The cost of a table is €40. All are welcome – please come along, bring some friends and support the appeal!

Paddy, our New Zealand born out-half, was badly burned in an incident just before Halloween when his heroic efforts in attempting to save a team-mate who had caught fire tragically led to his own injury. Paddy, who having only arrived this season, had already major a huge impact at the club where he is sadly missed on and off the field. We are glad to report that Paddy is making good progress in hospital in Galway where he is receiving ongoing medical attention, and hopes to be able to be return home soon. Sligo RFC would like to thank everyone who supported the event, including The Strand Bar for their great hospitality, auctioneer for the night Des Butler, anyone who donated items to the auction, other rugby clubs who generously contributed to the fund, and everyone who attended on the night. A special mention must also be made to the organising committee of Rodger Burrows, Cameron Giles, Aisling Burrows, Cliona O’Kelly, Marion Rolf and Rory Raftery, who worked hard in ensuring that not only was the event a great success but also achieving a nationwide response to their appeal and raising a sum of money that will hopefully make a great difference to Paddy as his recovery continues.

As you may or may not be aware a young Sligo Rugby Club player, our New Zealand outhalf Paddy Pearson was badly burned in an incident in Sligo just before Halloween. His heroic efforts saved his team-mate and tragically led to his own injury.

We are glad to report that Paddy is making progress in hospital in Galway where he is receiving ongoing medical attention. It looks like he will have to have a number of skin-graft operations for his injuries and this may well take him several years to recover from.

As a carpenter, the use of his hands is critical to Paddy’s livelihood. This is something that is of ongoing concern to him and those close to him in securing an income for the future.

We (Sligo RFC) have put together a fundraising group consisting of Rodger Burrows, Cameron Giles, Aisling Burrows, Cliona O’Kelly, Marion Rolf and Rory Raftery. We have organised a Race Night in The Strand on Friday November 28th at 8:30pm. The first race is off at 9pm and we hope to have a rugby memorabilia auction on the night.

There are several ways you can help – firstly, if you find yourself in Galway – please visit Paddy at the hospital, you don’t have to know him, just let him know that you know of him. Secondly and perhaps more importantly we need to try to raise as much funds as we can in the upcoming fundraiser – following are the ways you can help financially;

* Sponsor a race for €100

* Buy a horse, jockey or trainer for €20 each

* Take an ad in the booklet – full page €250
