The Junior Cup quarter final clash against Ballina is scheduled to kick-off at Ballina at 3PM on Sunday, March the 1st. Date and time are subject to change.
Despite their title challenge being all but ended by their defeat on Sunday to Corinithians, Sligo will be looking for a confidence-boosting victory at home to Galwegians this Sunday, Februrary 15th. This could be the last home game of the season, and all club members are asked to attend and show their support and gratitude to a Sligo side that has represented them so gallantly on the pitch all season. Kick-off is 2.30pm at Hamilton Park.
The final showdown. Winner takes all. Two tough, uncompromising sides going head to head for 80 minutes on which rests the outcome of this years Connacht JL1 League. While the match won’t see the league champions crowned mathematically, it will take a shock of gargantuan proportions to not see the winner of this Sunday’s game crowned champions in a couple of weeks.
Table toppers Sligo travel to Corinthian Park, Clounacauceen to face a smooth, free-flowing Corinthians outfit who sit just below Sligo in 2nd place, but whose home advantage will make them strong favourites this Sunday. However this won’t worry the gritty Sligo outfit who have been written off all year by many observers, but have continued to grind out result after result. Sligo have done everything asked of them so far this year, the management triumvirate of Joe Walsh, Roger Burrows, and Cameron Giles have assembled a team that can match any in Connacht. Walsh’s tactics have been excellent so far, playing to his team’s strengths with a formidable forward-driven attack and impenetrable defence the two outstanding features of Sligo’s campaign. The management trio have fostered a deep work ethic in the Sligo side, and all season they have conducted themselves superbly on and off the pitch. From the opening day victory away to Buccaneers, Sligo have been atop the table as they cruised to victory in Athlone before following up with a win at home to arch rivals Ballina. Loughrea were next up and a sparkling display in the Strandhill sunshine saw Sligo’s backline run riot and run out comfortable victors.
Sligo travel to Ballyhaunis on Sunday next to play the home side in Round 1 of the Heineken Connacht Junior Cup. Fresh from their victory over a useful Creggs outfit, Sligo will go into the game as warm favourites, as the Mayo side operates out of Division 1 B of the Connacht league, where they have struggled to make an impact this season. Anything other than a comfortable Sligo victory would be regarded as the shock of the season. The game has a 2 p.m. kick-off.
While this weekend’s clash at Hamilton Park will not see league champion’s crowned, it will go a long, long way to deciding the fate of this season’s Connacht JL1 league title. Table-toppers Sligo welcome Monivea, the dominant club in Connacht junior rugby in recent seasons, to Strandhill in what promises to be a titanic encounter. A packed crowd is expected as these two powerhouses of Connacht junior rugby do battle.
Sligo sit atop the JL1 table, unbeaten, a 0-0 draw away to Westport the only blemish on an otherwise faultless season. Eight wins and one draw, as their watertight defence and strong pack achieved result after result if not always with a spectacular performance. Sligo travel to Galway this Sunday, December 7th, seeking to immediately return to winning ways against OLBC. Sligo’s disappointing scoreless draw in Westport is the only blemish on their immaculate record so far this season, and with this being their last encounter before the Christmas break, will want to provide a victory that may prove crucial to their title aspirations. Table toppers Sligo face their toughest task so far on their undefeated odyssey of a season with a rescheduled away trip to Westport this Sunday, 23rd November. This was originally scheduled to be a rest week due to the Ireland’s vital clash with Argentina on the Saturday, but at the request of Westport, Sligo generously agreed to rearrange the fixture. Westport boast a mixed record of 3 wins and 4 defeats from their 7 games so far, but the bare results are misleading as three of those defeats have been by only one score against the other 3 clubs in the top four of the table. In their last encounter Westport produced a tremendous team performance to shock OLBC by 18-3 in Galway, and will go into this game full of confidence. Discipline may be the key to Sligo’s chances as Westport boast one of the best kickers in the Junior League in out-half Eddie Walsh, and his namesake Sligo coach Joe Walsh will have to ensure that his players do not afford this lethal place kicker any easy opportunities. Sligo recovered from their scare against Tuam to produce a clinical, forward-dominant performance against Corrib to win 17-0 and Sligo’s pack will need to produce a repeat performance to deal with their tough Westport counterparts. Kick off is 2-30pm in Westport and all Sligo RFC members are urged to travel and get behind their team as they seek to remain unbeaten.
Sligo U20s head to Limerick this Saturday, November 15th, to face a tough encounter against Old Crescent. All players are asked to attend and ensure that a strong side is fielded for what is sure to be a difficult fixture. The bus will leave the Garda barracks at 9.30am sharp.
Table topping Sligo travel to Creggs next weekend, Sunday October 12th, to face a Creggs side that can count themselves unlucky to be rooted to the bottom of the table. Sligo will be looking to maintain their 100% record, and coach Joe Walsh hopes to able to call on a full strength squad for what always proves to be an awkward away trip. Creggs are always abrasive and competitive at home, and will be desperate to secure their first win of the season in front of their home supporters. Kick off is 3pm and supporters are urged to travel to get behind the team in a game which should prove to be another test of Sligo’s title credentials.
