Sligo take spoils in Elliott Cup encounter

County Cavan RFC  7
Sligo RFC 27

Sligo RFC’s pre season preparations continued in a positive fashion with a fine win over a physical Cavan outfit at Swellan park in Cavan last Saturday. The match initiated the revival of a long standing fixture between the two clubs, which through the 70s, 80s and 90s saw the clubs battling it out on the pitch for the right to lift the Elliott cup.

Playing into the slight breeze, Sligo started the game strongly with the pack winning the early exchanges and securing clean possession for the half back pairing of Billy Leahy and Frankie Feeney to use. Some fine kicking saw Sligo camped in the home sides half. In the seventh minute this territorial advantage was almost rewarded when a fine line-out take from James Wilson was quickly moved to midfield, full back Julian Rippon expertly changed the angle and looked destined to score but was hauled down short of the Cavan line. Cavan were awarded a scrum but good pressure from flanker Simon Coulter caught the home team in possession behind their own line and the resulting scrum was awarded to the visitors. A fine drive from Sligo’s front row of Adrian Mc Hale, Ross Mannion and Jason East shunted their opposite numbers back and the Sligo scrum drove over the tryline to allow veteran number 8 Peter Mullan the opportunity to touch down. Rippon was narrowly wide with the conversion. Continue reading ‘Sligo take spoils in Elliott Cup encounter’

09/10 Connacht Junior league Division 1 fixtures announced

Sligo will begin their assault on the Connacht Junior league with a home tie against Galwegians at Hamilton park on the 20th of September. ‘Wegians are always a tough prospect but could prove especially difficult at this early stage in the season, as the AIL does not kick off until the 9th of October. On Sunday the 27th of September Sligo travel to Ballinrobe to take on the newly promoted side in what is always likely to be a tough physical encounter. The following Sunday, 4th October, Strandhill plays host to Galway city side OLBC, rated by many as last seasons most improved junior side with their exciting brand of open rugby. A trip to Dubarry park in Athlone follows on the 11th of October to face Buccaneers, who will be eager to avenge last years defeat by the north westerners. The last game before the halloween break sees Sligo travel to old rivals Westport on the 18th of October to lock horns with the Mayo outfit.
Sligo will need to be at their best to gather as many valuable league points as possible from their campaign start but training is continuing well at 7pm on tuesday and thursday nights at Collegians football pitch under the Guidance of first team coache Simon Galvan, second team coach Steve Alley and fitness specialist Chris Hopkins.
New players are always welcome.
