Fitness workshop for coaches

The Connacht branch and the IRFU are delighted to inform you that there will be a fitness workshop for all coaches in Sligo the 29th of November. The workshop will focus on fitness and conditioning for young players to adult beginners at strength training. This workshop will be based on the newly updated fitness and conditioning content in the Mini and foundation coaching courses.

The focus of this workshop is physical activity and movement skill development. The evening will concentrate on stages 1 and 2 of the Long Term Development Pathway, but will also investigate physical development of strength and conditioning of adults beginners. We will investigate physical activity levels and guidelines, the windows of opportunity for young players, PHV, Fundamental movement skills and the most appropriate content for young players and beginners.

Ladies Rugby welcome back at Sligo RFC

This week sees a very welcome return of ladies rugby to the club. Training will commence this Wednesday September 8th at 6pm at the Rugby Club in Strandhill. All ladies are welcome whether you have played before or not. Please contact coach Gavin Foley for more details on 087 2406848.

Sligo 2nd XV Commence Season Under New Coach

Sligo 2nds will begin their season this weekend with a friendly match against opposition still to be determined. Sligo RFC are delighted to announce a new addition to the coaching ranks at Hamilton Park this season with New Zealand native, Stephen Allay taking over as 2^nd team head coach. Stephen brings a vast wealth of experience to the post and will look to lead the team to a successful season. Training continues at the club at 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays and anyone who wants to play the 2nds this year is asked to attend the session this Friday 26^th September.

New Player Guides Available

Sligo RFC Director of Rugby, Bernie Kelly, has just completed two new player guides for Outhalves and Scrum-halves.Â These guides provide an insight into the role of each position and outline effective training routines.

Associate Refereeâ€™s Course

An Associate Refereeâ€™s Course will take place on Wednesday 19th December at 1830 at the Institute of Technology, Sligo. Information regarding the precise location of the venue at the IT to follow.

This course will be provided by Ken Imbusch â€“ Connacht Branch Development Officer.

New Coaching Personnel

Two new coaches, Niall Gray and club captain, Jamie Livingstone, have made themselves available to assist in Youth coaching, and these are being allocated to U-16 coach, Peter Brady. With Sligo also fielding a very successful U-15 side, the coaching staff from that squad are not available on a regular basis to help with the U-16′s, so Jamie and Niall will provide back-up to Peter, who is one of the club’s longest standing and most dedicated coaches.

The U-13 coaching staff has been bolstered by Finbar Filan, a former star Sligo prop, who renews a partnership with his former playing colleague, Michael O’Hehir. The club is particularly pleased to welcome the first female to Youth management, as Ber Dunne, who has vast experience in administration in Munster rugby, will assume a managerial role with the U-18′s, where the coaches are Simon Galvan and Ciaran Foley.

Y.D.O. Scheme Now Up And Running

Youth Development Officer, Gavin Foley,has now commenced rugby coaching in local primary and post-primary schools. This year the scheme has been extended to include Grange Primary, Rathcormack N.S. and St.John’s N.S., while there will also be coaching in Scoil Mhuire, Secondary School, Ballymote.

Management for 2nd XV Announced

Sligo’s 2nd team for the upcoming Connacht Junior 2 League will have a very experienced quartet in charge. Two former club Presidents, Michael Storey and Des Butler will be joined by a former 1st XV coach, Fineen O’Driscoll and Declan Lynch, who have both, over many years, given trojan service to the club. With large numbers attending training, Sligo should field a very strong side in this grade.

Bonding Week-End For Senior Side

A panel of 26 1st team players, and the team management, will have special training, goal setting and bonding sessions this coming week-end in Breaffy House Hotel and Sports Centre. The party returns on Sunday afternoon.
