Sligo RFC 15 :: Westport 3
Just like the Senior team Sligos 2nd team have reached the halfway point of the season unbeaten. On Sunday last they overcame Westport by 15 points to 3. This leaves them top of the J2 league and well poised to win overall honours in this competition.
Under the coaching skills of Steve Alley this team has flourished and on Sunday they looked well drilled and conditioned and in the end they were by far the stronger side. The team played with confidence and showed that they will be very difficult to beat as they defend their line very strongly and they have the ability to score trys which has seen them progress this season.
This squad functions well at the set plays and the pack supply a constant source of possession for the backs. It is in the back line that they are the biggest threat with several very good individuals that would be well up to first team standard. Against Wesport they scored three trys all from the backs. Stephen Kilgallon on the left wing got in for two and what a good finisher he is with lots of gas and good hands. Donal Finneran playing at outhalf is also a fine athlete and he also got over for a try having sliced through the opponents back line using his power and pace.
Mikey Conlon at scrum half was again very busy and he keeps the opposition fringe defenders busy. In the pack the two second rowers Ciaran Stafford and Dermot Kiely excellent and their work rate around the pitch is top class. The front row are solid with Brian Kane having a fine match at tight head prop.
While there are quiet a few games still left in the league this squad are in pole position at this point and if they continue to progress then surely they have a great chance of bringing a trophy back to Sligo this season
