Sligo RFC 39 :: Westport RFC 0
The Sligo under 14s notched up an other convincing win last Sunday against Westport at home. From the kick off the home team hit the ground running piling pressure on to Westport’s defence and it was not long before Conan O’Donnell ran in a superb try. The coversion didn’t make it over the bar but Mc Grath was back for the kick off and claimed the ball to take a great run into the Westport half again putting position back to O Donnell where he headed again for the line fending of several wesport tacklers before notching up try number two. Again the conversion dropped short from the boot of Evan Mc Grath’.
As the game progressed the Sligo lads were stronger in all areas of the field winning most of the scrums and well delivered ball from Ronan Redmond to his wing allowed Stephen Kearns and Jack Keegan combine well to get back to Westport’s twenty two yard line. A pick and drive from Jack Tillion got the drive going leading to Darren Byrne taking the ball from the back of the ruck and running under the posts for another try. Mc Grath converted leaving the score 17 nil. From the kick off Diarmiud Mulligan collected the ball hitting the wing and in another blast of speed Darren Harte broke for the line but Westport’s defence took him out for a line out. The home team could not do much wrong on the day winning back the ball in the line out and some super work from Stephen Kearns saw him go over the line for a fourth try. Coversions were few in the first half as the ball hit the upright and from the kick off we saw Westport set up camp close to the Sligo line. The viisitors went through the phases as Sligo had to defend hard but a double movement from the opposition was penalised and no try was given. The ball did not find touch from the clearance and Westport were back but some strong pressure from Daniel Ford and a brilliant steal and kick from Evan Mc Grath pushed the opposition right back into their own half.
The second half saw some fresh legs coming on James Hanson and Rory Mullen’s taking over for Jack Tillion and Ronan Redmond and it didn’t see any let up for Westport as Sligo were back pushing their defence to the limit. Fine drives from Ryan, Bright, Sexton and O’Donnell powered the ball towards the line to be finished by Bright to bring the score to 27 nil to the home team. Enda Clarke and Conor Herraghty joined the action with 15 minutes left in the game and both were involved in a move which lead to a great try from Jake Sexton. Rory Mullen’s stepped up to take the conversion and again the luck of the day did not see the ball go over. Seconds later saw the arrival of Stephen Knowles, Luke Morrison, Anthony Gwynne, and Kalian Graham who made a super contribution to the pack and was instrumental when allowing Morrison space to charge at the westport defence before Mullen’s released Byrne who finished it of with a great run under the posts. Stephen Kearns Converted with a super kick on the final whistle giving a full time score of 39 nil to the home team.
This was a very convincing win for Sligo under 14s and with strong performances in all areas the pitch it was hard not to see a home win but if man of the match was handed out it would surly be given to a classy display from Conan O’Donnell. Both teams were very complementary of a very balanced controlled approach from the ref John Kane.
