Corinthians 0 :: Sligo RFC 15
Sligo completely demolished Corinthians in a 15-0 victory in Galway which saw the Sligo side completely outclass a resilient Corinthians side last Saturday evening. Tries from Diarmuid O’Dowd Hill and James O’Hehir in the first half gave Sligo the breathing space to dictate the play for the rest of the game.
Sligo’s victory came with thanks to fantastic scrummaging and line-out play from the forwards and scrum-half, as their over-ruling display starved the opposition of the ball for long periods while it served the backs with quality ball.
The first try from O’Dowd Hill was a masterclass in powerful attacking play, as he impaled through the Corinthians defense with ease to muscle over the line in the corner. The resulting conversion by Enda Gavin from the touchline was unlucky not to sneak over as it hit the near post as bounced wide.
Continuing ascendency from the Sligo forwards saw the opportunity for quick ball out which saw James O’Hehir cut through the Corinthians defence. His quick pace and his guile to find the gap saw him get the ball down virtually under the posts which made Enda Gavin’s task in converting the try easy to be accomplished.
The last kick of the first half saw Gavin make it 15-0 at half time, as he booted a penalty over from distance to punish the Corinthian’s indisicpline.
The second half was a scrappy affair, which never saw Sligo in trouble as they set up camp in the opposition half and steered the ship towards victory from there. Any Corinthians’ counter attack was quickly thwarted by Gavin’s kicking from full back and ferocious tackling from Enda Roche and Mark Leydon.
Tireless work on the wing from both Cadden and Burke in attack and defence led to many opportunites for Sligo throughout the game while nipping Corinthians’ attacks in the bud with relentless tackling.
Overall, it was a commanding display from Sligo in which the outclassed Corinthians in virtually all areas of the pitch. The forwards led by Fabian Zwada were powerful in their ball carrying while also being tenacious in the ruck.
