Sligo RFC U19 7 :: Galwegians 35
A new look Sligo XV lost their first league outing on Sunday last in Strandhill.
This season the management have to plan their side with the loss of 3 top players Niall Keneally, Tighe Power and Chris Nairn who have joined the UL Bohs academy in Limerick and a decision has also been taken to minimise the number of club games for Grammer School senior players who have a full schedule at this time. Sean Henry of Charlestown has been a part of the Munster A squad over the last two outings and is making very good progress up the Rugby ladder. Sean who started his underage rugby with Sligo has since moved to Limerick club UL Bohemians, a good hunting ground for several of Sligo’s young guns. Sean who plays at hooker is part of the UL Bohemians senior AIL squad but his elevation to the Munster side says a lot about his ability and dedication.
Everyone at Sligo Rugby Club wishes him well.
Westport RFC 8 :: Sligo RFC 10
Persistent rain through the night and early morning resulted in very slippery conditions for Sligo’s third outing in the U-17 League. Last season both the U15 and U16 teams travelled to Westport and conceded league points. However, there was a palpable resolve in the Sligo camp to prevent a recurrence in this season’s campaign.

The conditions made it difficult for players to settle into the game and the opening minutes same handling errors on both sides. A dream start for the visitors seemed on the way when, five minutes into game, Sligo recycled possession a number of times and sent Diarmuid O’Dowd Hill powering towards the line with out-half Michael Martin and winger David Burke in support. David received the ball 10 metres from the line and crossed over for a touchdown but play was called back for an infringement. Continue reading ‘Sligo U-17’s Grind Out Result’

Sligo RFC 2nd XV 44 :: Ballina 2nd XV 3
Sligo’s 2nd’s team emulated their senior counterparts with another well deserved win over local rivals Ballina in this Junior league B encounter at Hamilton Park on Sunday. The home outfit have won all their games to date in this division and are starting to build momentum for a sustained challenge for league honours. Sligo ran in a total of 8 tries in a complete team performance to earn a bonus point and outclass the visitors. Tries from James Coulter, Donal Finneran, Matt Drury, Clive Morris, Stephen Kilgallon, Seamie O’Hara coupled with a brace from ‘man of the match’ Joe Sweeny and two Frankie Feeney conversions saw off the challenge of the Moysiders. Prop forward Phiilip Allen was the pick off the forwards and the returning from injury Niall O Hara gave a noticeable display.
Westport RFC 6 :: Sligo RFC 14
Sligo made it five wins from five in the Connacht Junior league division 1A with a well deserved victory over the Westport Bulls at a rain soaked Carrowholly on Sunday .With conditions making it difficult to play expansive rugby Sligo managed to score two tries without reply from the home team.
Sligo kicked off and immediately tried to impose their running game on the mayo men but did not gain any reward for their adventure. Westport countered and some good tactical kicking gained them a foothold in the Sligo 22, where the referee penalised the visitors for holding on, on the ground. Home outhalf Eddie Walsh took full advantage with a well struck penalty to give his team a 3-0 lead after three minutes. Continue reading ‘Five from Five!’

The visitors racked up 5 Trys against the physical midlands outfit, who challenged them all the way to the final whistle. Buccaneers won the toss and elected to play with the aid of the breeze. Paddy Pearson’s high kick off was keenly contested by the Sligo pack and this early pressure gave them a foothold in the home teams half. The work of the pack was rewarded after 4 minutes when the ball was moved left to right across the backline on the Bucc’s 22. Quick ruck ball was produced and scrum half Billy Leahy switched the play back towards the left touchline. Fast hands saw the ball transferred to winger Julian Rippon who outpaced the cover and scored in the corner. Jack Macklin’s well struck conversion effort was narrowly wide. A perfect start for the visitors. From the kick off Sligo again went on the attack, bringing their backline into play at every opportunity but their enterprise was not rewarded as the final pass let them down on a number of occasions. Sligo’s Junior b team made it two from two with a six try demolition of Westport’s junior b side at Carrowholly on Sunday. Tries from Phillip Allen, Roger Burrows, Aaron Cawley, Joe Sweeney, James Coulter and Matt Drury combined with 4 conversions and a penalty from Mikey Conlon saw the visitors run out winners by 41 points to 6.
Next Sunday sees Sligo at home for a local derby against Mayo rivals Ballina. A third win out of three would set the team up to contend for league honours.
SLIGO U17s 70 :: Creggs U17s 0
A revised format for Youth’s Rugby sees a new U-17 competition allowing Sligo RFC to draw players from two squads, one that contested last year’s U-16 Cup Final and the other, the U-16 Plate Final.
In the opening exchanges there was early indication that this would be a one-sided affair with Creggs fielding a side that was depleted through injury. Continue reading ‘Youth Results’

With a great first half display of forwards power and backs speed and flair Sligo took a deserved lead of 31 -5 into half time. Sligo’s 2nd team emulated their first team counterparts with a well deserved away win in their first league game against Ballinrobe at the racecourse grounds in Ballinrobe on Sunday. Fine play from the dynamic Ross O’Boyle and man of the match Maxim Bulsin combined with the fine running lines of Thomas Gormely were features of a performance that demonstrated the potential of a team well coached by Steve Alley and Managed by the Aaron Tansey.

Sligo RFC 40 :: OLBC 3
Sligo cemented their place at the top of division 1A of the Connacht Junior league with a bonus point victory over Galway visitors Our Lady’s Boys Club at Hamilton park, Strandhill on Sunday. The north westerners scored six tries without reply on their way to a comprehensive victory.
The home team were superior in both scrum and lineout but it was the work of their exciting backline that put the visitors to the sword. With conditions tailor made for running rugby Sligo made a dream start.
Paddy Pearson’s long kick off ensured the home team were awarded a line out on the ten metre line. Hooker Ross Mannion’s accurate throw was collected by James Wilson and the ball was quickly transferred to scrum half Billy Leahy. Leahy released Pearson who brilliantly dummied and stepped inside the onrushing defence before accelerating past the cover to touch down between the posts. Outside centre, Jack Macklin, easily converted to put the home team 7 points to the good. Continue reading ‘Another Maximum for Sligo’
