09/05/2005 - Heineken Junior Cup Final

Sligo 22
Monivea 13

Sligo secured their fifth Heineken Junior Cup title in their long history on Sunday after a comprehensive victory over Monivea at the Sportsgound.

Gary Boland’s first half try and penalty helped them into a ten point half time lead turning into a considerable wind in the second half.

Monivea needed to score early in that second period but couldn’t break down a resilient Sligo defense and two huge kicks from Boland extended his side’s lead. Boland’s virtuoso performance saw him take the Heineken Man of the Match award.

09/10 Connacht Junior league Division 1 fixtures announced

Sligo will begin their assault on the Connacht Junior league with a home tie against Galwegians at Hamilton park on the 20th of September. ‘Wegians are always a tough prospect but could prove especially difficult at this early stage in the season, as the AIL does not kick off until the 9th of October. On Sunday the 27th of September Sligo travel to Ballinrobe to take on the newly promoted side in what is always likely to be a tough physical encounter. The following Sunday, 4th October, Strandhill plays host to Galway city side OLBC, rated by many as last seasons most improved junior side with their exciting brand of open rugby. A trip to Dubarry park in Athlone follows on the 11th of October to face Buccaneers, who will be eager to avenge last years defeat by the north westerners. The last game before the halloween break sees Sligo travel to old rivals Westport on the 18th of October to lock horns with the Mayo outfit.
Sligo will need to be at their best to gather as many valuable league points as possible from their campaign start but training is continuing well at 7pm on tuesday and thursday nights at Collegians football pitch under the Guidance of first team coache Simon Galvan, second team coach Steve Alley and fitness specialist Chris Hopkins.
New players are always welcome.
