U13s defeated in Connacht decider

Sligo U13s fell at the final hurdle in their bid for Connacht cup glory when they went down to a strong Galwegians outfit at the Sportsground in Galway last Saturday.

Following earlier round victories over Gort, Castlebar and and Corinthians, the Sligo boys had high hopes going into this encounter but the sharper Galway outfit put paid to Sligo’s best efforts.

Playing with the breeze in the first half, the opening minutes saw Sligo put the ball through the hands well and run strongly at their opponents, but despite their best efforts were unrewarded for their good play. Having soaked up Sligos early pressure Galwegians turn came and they attacked with purpose creating a gap in the sligo defence and scoring under the posts. A second try soon followed following some fine running play by the ‘wegians backs.

The final score of the first half came from a cooly slotted penalty by the blues outhalf.

The Second half began as the first ended with the physically bigger Galway boys putting pressure on the brave Sligo defence. The inevitable third try came after 6 minutes to leave the Sligo team with a mountain to climb.

Sligo, however, were not going to be denied a score and when some great work on the floor by flanker Evan mc Grath was rewarded with fast ball for the Sligo backs, Captain Mark Geritty crashed his way through the blue defence for a well taken score which he converted himself.

Sligo bravely tried to close the gap but the ‘wegians boys were not going to be denied and eventually ran out comfortable winners.

This was the first competive final for this Sligo outfit and judging by the talent and commitment on display it wont be long before they take the next step and bring home the silverware.
