“When you meet a gent paying all kinds of rent
For a flat that could flatten the Taj Mahal
Call it sad, call it funny
But it’s better than even money
That the guys only doing it for some doll”

Martin Reilly retains coveted Ladies Cup

Martin Reilly, the Club Senior Team Sponsor has won, for the 2nd year running, the much coveted Ladies Cup on Sligo Bay this past August. Martin has now won the Ladies Cup a total of 7 times in the last 11 years on a number of different boats – a great record by any standards.

The Ladies Cup, as it is known was first contested in 1821 on Lough Gill. The race was strictly classed, only allowing for boats which were a maximum of 26 feet and six inches long. The course sailed was twice around the lake, a distance of almost 18 miles. The Ladies cup is sailed for annually by the home fleet and visiting cruisers to the Sligo Yacht Club and is the oldest perpetual trophy in the world for which sailors still compete.

Former winners of the Ladies Cup include the late Bobby Butler, brother of past president and prominent club committee member Des Butler in 1993, and Vincent Raftery, father of club membership secretary Rory Raftery in 1987.

The Sligo RFC committee and members offer their congratulations to Martin.
