Junior Inter-provincial Appointment

The Junior Inter-provincial championship commences in April. In this year’s campaign, Connacht will play their home game [ V Leinster on May 3rd] in Ballinasloe, and travel to Armagh to play Ulster on April 26th, while they go to St. Senan’s RFC, Shannon on May 10th to play Munster. There is a Sligo link with the management structure, as Pat Curran is Connacht’s Assistant Manager, and he can be relied on to do an outstanding job. Pat formerly coached the Connacht Juniors, and also starred as a player for the province in the 1980′s.

Aaron Spring Chosen on International Youths Squad

Club President Tom Gilligan making a presentation to new Youth International Aaron Spring, accompanied by Sligo RFC Youth Chairman John Davey.
Congratulations to 16 year old Aaron Spring, who has been selected on the Irish International Youths squad which travels to play France on Saturday next [February 9th]. Aaron has been an inspirational figure as a No. 8, on our U-16 side all season. On Saturday week last, he played a key role in Connacht’s victory in the inter-provincial Youths final in Mullingar.

A very versatile player, who possesses pace, power and footballing acumen, he was an outstanding full-back for Summerhill College in last week’s Connacht Senior Schools’ local derby against Sligo Grammar School. Aaron looks destined to have a very bright future in the game.

Grammar School Prevail In Thrilling Local Derby

Summerhill College 7 :: Sligo Grammar School 13

Sligo Grammar School emerged as worthy victors in the Connacht Colleges’ Senior Cup quarter final against Summerhill College at Summerhill on Wednesday last in an enthralling cup tie, where both sides played with passion, commitment and skill.

Playing before a large vociferous crowd, on a bitterly cold afternoon, the teams were understandably affected by the tension of the occasion, and were prone to making some uncharacteristic errors in the early stages. However, in the best tradition of schools’ rugby, although the exchanges were always ferociously contested, the game was played in a very sporting spirit, which is a tribute to all the players and their coaches. France v Ireland

With Ireland away to France this coming weekend we think it’s fitting to show Ken O’Neil consorting with the enemy – in this case 2 Chabals! As if one wasn’t bad enough. From World Cup 2007. If you look closely you might see a few other Sligo RFC heads. Thankfully “l’Homme des Cavernes” isn’t in action this weekend – I’m sure however that Ken will be :)

AIB All-Ireland Cup Tie Re-fixed

The Quarter Final of the AIB All-Ireland Junior Cup between Sligo and Crosshaven, which was postponed on Saturday last because the pitch was unplayable, has been refixed by the IRFU for Saturday February 23rd in Hamilton Park at 2.30 pm.

Under 14s League Campaign Over

Buccaneers 15 :: Sligo 12

Sligo U-14 rugby team played Buccaneers U-14 in the semi-final of the Connaught League on Sunday last.

This game was originally scheduled to be played in Hamilton Park, Strandhill, but the pitch there was declared unplayable due to recent heavy rain. A decision was then taken to switch the game to Dubary Park, Athlone, home to Buccaneers R.F.C. It must be said that the playing surface that this game played on was anything but suitable for playing rugby. Continue reading ‘Under 14s League Campaign Over’

No League Games Next Week-End

As the quarter finals of the Heineken Connacht Junior Cup are being played this coming week-end, neither Sligo’s 1st or 2nd XV’s have a Connacht league game on Sunday next. However, it is possible that the 1st team’s AIB Cup game against Crosshaven will be refixed for next Saturday, but this wont be decided until after we have gone to press.

There was only one Junior 1 league game played on Sunday last, with Tuam, who are battling relegation, scoring a very significant 20-19 victory over Buccaneers in Tuam. This result certainly throws them a lifeline, and will ensure that both Sligo and Tuam will have plenty to play for when the sides meet in the league in Tuam on Sunday February 24th.

Sligo 2nd's v Westport Match Report

Westport 20 :: Sligo 2nd XV 7

Sligo 2nd team played a strong Westport side in a virtual mud bath in Westport on Sunday last. Because of the appalling underfoot conditions, the referee from the home club wisely ruled that all scrums would be non-contested, and this certainly did not favour Sligo’s strong scrummaging pack. Sligo were slow to settle and trailed by 15-0 at the interval. However, they responded very positively to team manager, Des Butler’s half-time pep talk, and they dominated the exchanges for long periods in the second half. Birth Of Baby with Sporting Genes

Congratulations to senior team second row, Peter Mullan and his wife, Caroline, on the birth of their baby son, which occurred on Monday of last week. Young Master Mullan is certainly well endowed with sporting genes, as his father, Peter, who has given trojan service to Sligo RFC, is among the best players ever produced by the club. He is also a versatile sportsman, having played gaelic football with St. Mary’s, U.C.D. and Sligo. His mother, Caroline, is one of Yeats Co. Hockey team’s star players.

Congratulations are also extended to the proud Grandparents, club Trustee and former President, Brian Mullan and his wife, Sheila, and Tom and Ann Byrne.

Monthly Meeting Of Club

The February Monthly Meeting of the club will be held in Bree’s Bar on Tuesday February 12th at 8 pm. There is a number of very important items on the agenda. Committee members are asked to check their E-mails for communications from the club’s Hon. Secretary, Michael Storey.

Last Call For Alcohol Free Disco Tickets

Tickets for the alcohol-free teenage disco, which will be held in the Clubhouse, Hamilton Park on Friday February 15th at 9 pm, went on sale from the usual sellers last week, and at the time of going to press had almost sold out. Immediate purchase is strongly recommended, in order to avoid disappointment. This again will be a strictly all ticket disco, and under no circumstances will cash be accepted at the door. There will be absolutely no exceptions to this decision by the Committee.

Anyone without a ticket for the disco should not come near the precincts of Sligo RFC on that evening, and parents/guardians are advised of this. All arrangements for the disco are in the very capable hands of the Event Organiser, Justin Harte, and the Chief Steward will be Niall Draper. All stewards should report to Niall by 8.30 pm on that evening.
