Under 10 Match Report from Tuam

Saturday saw the U10′s in Tuam for a mini-blitz with teams from Tuam, Monivea and An Ghaeltacht represented.

The first match was against the home team and the boys gave a tremendous performance and out played Tuam by winning 5-1.

Second up was An Ghaeltacht. This was a harder game and was closely contested but a few decisions went against Sligo that resulted in final scoreline of 4-2 in favour of An Ghaeltacht.

The final game saw a resurgence in form from Sligo who outplayed Monivea in every aspect of the game ending as emphatic victors of a scoreline of 6 tries to 3.

The overall performance saw excellent mauling and rucking from the forwards who not only set up the backs but scored 5 tries themselves. Committed tackling and good link up play from the team ensured that this outing was by far the best team performance of the season.

Well done to the full panel of 23 who traveled.

Under 14s Tough It Out

Castlebar RFC 8 :: Sligo RFC 12

Sligo’s U14 Rugby team travelled to Castlebar on Sunday last to play the local team in the fourth round of the North Connaught U14 league. While the Sligo representatives continued their winning streak, the overall performance on this occasion was not up to the usual high standard. Continue reading ‘Under 14s Tough It Out’

2nd's Unlucky Not To Take The Spoils

Galwegians 3rd XV 17 :: Sligo 2nd XV 15

Sligo’s 2nd team’s improvement in the Connacht Junior 2 League continued at Glenina on Sunday last, when they were most unfortunate not to have gotten at least a share of the spoils against a strong Galwegians side. With just a couple of minutes remaining, Sligo trailed by 17-10, but in a barn-storming finale they laid siege to the home side’s line, and prop forward, Ross O’Boyle, crashed over beside the posts for a great try. The conversion would have given Sligo a well merited draw, but alas, the kick from in front of the posts was off target, so Galwegians got a reprieve they scarcely deserved. Local Derby In Heffernan Park

Monthly Committee Meeting

The December meeting of the Committee has been brought forward by one week, and will be held in Bree’s Bar, Strandhill, on Tuesday next, December 4th at 8 pm. This is a very important meeting, as a number of urgent matters are on the agenda. All committee members should check their E-mails for communications from the Hon. Secretary, Michael Storey.

Heineken Connacht Cup Draw In Glasshouse

For the first time, the draw for the Heineken Connacht Junior Cup will be held in Sligo, and it will take place on Monday night next, December 3rd, at 8 pm in the Glasshouse Hotel. The evening is being very generously sponsored by the hosts, Heineken, who are tremendous supporters of rugby at all levels. Among the attendance will be the Connacht Branch President, Michael Cunningham [Westport], the CEO of Connacht Rugby, Gerry Kelly, Pat Heneghan of Heineken, members of the Connacht Branch and members of the Connacht Magners’ League and European Challenge Cup squad. All club members, players and friends of Sligo rugby are cordially invited to attend.

U-20's Game Called Off

There was disappointment for the U-20 players, and their coaches Roy Cooper and Ciaran Foley, when Castlebar on Friday evening called off their U-20 league game with Sligo, which was fixed for Hamilton Park on Saturday last. It is most unsatisfactory to have a game called off at short notice, so the squad had to be content with a training session on Saturday morning. Ber Dunne has arranged two upcoming fixtures, with the side away to Monaghan RFC on Saturday next, while on the following Saturday there is a home game against Enniskillen.

Christmas Draw

The Event Organiser, Joe Burgess, has now distributed tickets to all sections of the club for the Annual Christmas Draw which will be held in the Glasshouse Hotel on the evening of the Members’ Christmas party on Thursday December 20th. Permission to hold the draw has been granted by Garda Inspector Gerry Connolly. It can be confidently stated that the prizes on offer even exceed these of previous years. Among the prizes are a mammoth Christmas Hamper, 2 Stand tickets for a home 2008 Six Nations International, a Week-end for two in a luxury Hotel, Dinners for Two, Cases of Wine, Valuable Vouchers for Sports Shop and an array of other valuable prizes.

Sellers are requested to return all cash to Joe Burgess as soon as possible, and any seller requiring a further supply of tickets should contact Joe at 071-9177150.

Christmas Alcohol Free Teenage Disco

Tickets for the Christmas alcohol free teenage disco, which will be held in the Clubhouse, Hamilton Park on Friday December 21st. at 9 pm, go on sale this week. The Event Organiser, Justin Harte will distribute the tickets to the usual sellers. As demand is certain to greatly exceed supply, early purchase of tickets is strongly advised. This will be a strictly all ticket event, and again the Committee of Sligo RFC will insist that only those in possession of a ticket for the event will gain admittance, and there will be absolutely no exceptions to this. Accordingly, parents and guardians are advised of this, and they are requested to check if their teenager has a ticket for the disco, as teenagers should not approach the precincts of the club without a ticket.

Grammar Juniors In Connacht League Final

On Thursday next, Sligo Grammar Schools’ Junior team, coached by the club’s Hon. Treasurer, Jimmy Staunton, play Marist College, Athlone in Creggs in the Connacht Schools’ Junior League final. Grammar have given a series of impressive performances in their unbeaten run all season, and the side is backboned by players from the club’s U-14 and U-15 sides. Last Thursday at the Mall they defeated Colaiste Iognaid, Galway [the Jes.] in the semi-final by 18-8, but would not have been flattered by a bigger winning margin. The Marist side is likely to be based on last season’s Buccaneers U-14 side which beat all-comers in the province by big scores, so they should be a formidable team, but the well organised Grammar boys might have a shock in store for them. The Grammar squad are wished well from everyone in the club.

Under 10s: Lions tamed by weather

On arrival at Galwegians last Saturday, the Under 10 squad was confronted with extraordinarily harsh natural and infrastructural conditions. Nevertheless, a superb performance form the Lions side – the squad was large enough to establish two teams on the day (Lions and Tigers) – ensued that at half time they lead to a well worked try from Mark Keegan. Excessive and illegal use of the hand-off resulted in an early sin binning for a member of the Lions side. Numerically weakened and continuing to pay little or no heed to the referee’s warnings about the ongoing use off hand-offs, Galwegians scored an equalizer.

Eventually, Galwegians strength in numbers materialised when they touched down for a winning score. Poor concentration levels among a number of Lions players contributed to the manner of this generally undeserved two tries to one defeat.

Overall, in what were probably unplayable conditions, this was a superb team performance.
Well done to all of the Lions.
