Club Policy On Under-Age Players

At a recent Committee meeting, the issue of under-age players playing outside their age group was discussed. At the meeting, the following club policy regarding Juvenile and Youth players was unanimously adopted: All players must train and play with their own age group. A player may only play with a higher age group team if his own team has no game on that day, and provided he has the permission of his own age group coach to do so.

This policy was adopted to facilitate the optimum development of under-age players, and to accord with best practice on player development.

Membership Hon. Secretary, Rory Raftery, is now finalising the membership list for the season, and all who have not already done so should forward their remittances to Rory at his office at Anvil House, Burton St., Sligo immediately. Sean,who is looking fit and well after a recent illness, played as hooker for the club in the early 1960′s, and retains a deep interest in Sligo RFC affairs.

Sligo Fail To Convert Their Territorial Advantage

Sligo 7 :: Railway Union 7

The game was played in ideal conditions, and while the exchanges were always competitive, Sligo dominated territorially. Regrettably, they failed to transfer this dominance into scores on the board. 1st Team Travel To Play OLBC

On Sunday next, Sligo travel to the Galway Sportsgrounds to play OLBC in the semi-final of the regional, ‘warm-up’ league. This will undoubtedly be the side’s biggest test of the season so far. Last week’s display certainly highlighted that Sligo are far from the finished article, so a vastly improved display will be necessary. OLBC are invariably formidable opponents on their home turf, as Sligo will vividly remember from their visit there on October 29th last, when they were shocked in the league. The game kicks off at 3 p.m..

Successful Disco

Last Friday night’s alcohol-free teenage disco was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by the capacity attendance. The club President wishes to thank the 29 stewards who were present on the evening and who ensured everything ran so smoothly. In particular he wishes to express his gratitude to Justin Harte, who was responsible for the logistics, and who did an outstanding job, to House Chairman, John Kane and to Hon. Secretary, Michael Storey, who recruited the stewards. The next disco will be at the Halloween mid-term break, and will be held on Friday October 26th at 9 pm. Full details later.

Annual Yearbook

The Sligo RFC Yearbook for the 2007-2008 season has just gone to print and will be available very soon. This year’s issue will run to 60 pages and will deal with all aspects of the club, and hopefully will serve as a source of information for members, players, parents, sponsors and advertisers. The booklet has been compiled by the club PRO and Joe Burgess, and the cover has been designed by Juvenile Coach, and Internationally acclaimed artist, Annie West. The club President wishes to especially thank Jonathan Hill for all his assistance and technical advice with the Yearbook.

Among the contributions certain to attract interest is an article by Cyril Shaw [President 1957-1959], and an article by George Hamlet on his life-time involvement with the club.
