Recently Tommy Breheny stepped down as Sligo GAA football manager. In his short time at the helm, Tommy established himself as certainly among the top three GAA football managers in the country, and arguably as the very best. Tommy’s company, the Oates Breheny Group, are great supporters of Sligo RFC, and again this season took a full page advertisement in our Yearbook.
On a personal basis,and on behalf of the entire club membership, the club President wishes Tommy, his wife Ruth, and family, all the best in the future, and again wishes to congratulate him on his historic contribution to Sligo sport.
Sligo Blacks 6 :: Ballina Blues 3
After a the physical encounter of the Reds V Greens the Sligo Blacks and Ballina Blues served up a contrasting treat of open rugby. Both teams showed a high commitment to running rugby with the ball being spread from side to side with some accurate passing and great running lines. One prominent feature of the Sligo play was their ability to off load in the tackle and keep the ball alive. This payed dividends early on when Sligo raced into a 3 trys to 1 lead. Playing in only his second game for Sligo Conor Mc Goldrick showed his great finishing ability to get his name on the score sheet twice before half time. Super running by Oisin Cogan, Darran Kilcawley, Steven Knowles and good clearance kicking by Evan Barry ensured Sligo remained two scores ahead at half time. Sligo started the second half as they finished the first with strong running and great passing. A feature of this was the much improved distribution of scrum half Darren Harte who has obviously been working hard on his passing skills. In a day for new players Darragh Byrne crossed the opposition line in the second half following good work in the forwards by Chris Kane and Ben Rooney and by the returning Killian Kelly in the backline. Ballina came back into the game with two tries but any hope of a comeback was dashed by two fine Sligo scores late in the second half.

Sligo Reds 5 :: Ballina Green 3
Played in perfect rugby conditions Sligo and Ballina served up an intensively physical encounter between two wholly committed teams. Playing with the breeze in the first half Sligo were quickly into their stride and following some great ball carrying by Conan O Donnell and Matthew Cosgrove Sligo crossed the line for the games first score. Ballina quickly reacted and some great running by their speedy backline ensured they were back on level terms before long. Both teams then traded scores before some quick thinking by scrum half Stephen Kearins and great distribution by Niall Connolly put Sligo 3-2 ahead going into the interval. The second half began with Sligo immediately on the attack and their much improved rucking skills, especially by Sean Hurley and Padraig Mitchell,saw them turn over crucial ball in the Ballina half which was quickly converted into a 2 try lead. The sides again traded scores in the final few minutes but the final blast saw Sligo leave the pitch worthy 5 tries to 3 winners. Along with those already mentioned sligo were well served by Arthur Wall, Tristan Probst, Mark Gerrity, Rory Molloy, Alex Selby and Conor Greene.

On Sunday next Sligo play Corinthians in Hamilton Park [Kick-Off 3 pm] in the opening round of the Connacht Junior 1 League. This will to be a tricky assignment for Sligo, as the Galway side is certain to provide formidable opposition. Tickets for the alcohol free teenage disco, which will be held in the Clubhouse, Hamilton Park, on Friday, October 26th have gone on sale from the usual sellers. As stated in last week’s notes, this is strictly an all ticket event, and only those with tickets will be admitted.
All stewards are required to report by 8.30 pm at the latest.
A special club function is being held in the Glasshouse Hotel on Saturday next, October 20th, to coincide with the telecast of the World Cup final. Following the game, the club Yearbook will be launched by the President, Tom Gilligan.
All club members are welcome, and a special invitation is extended to former players, so that old friendships can be renewed and revived. Among the large attendance anticipated will be invited guests, Cyril Shaw, who was club President when the club reformed in 1957, and another former President, George Hamlet. Both Cyril and George penned articles for the Yearbook, which are certain to be of interest to club members.
Although Sligo RFC is the second oldest club in the province [after UCG], having been founded in 1890, the club had a period of prolonged inactivity, until it was reactivated by Cyril and his colleagues. This season marks the 50th anniversary of that relaunch, and the club, which today, happily has record numbers of members on its books, is also celebrating 50 years of unbroken service in the promotion of the game.
With a World Cup final, a Yearbook launch, a 50th anniversary, and the imminent state of the art development and relocation of the club, there will be much to celebrate, so a great night is assured.
The Connacht Branch of the IRFU have just released the 2007/2008 Youth Booklet. This contains all the contact and fixture information for all youth competitions and clubs participating in them. Download it here.

Sligo 2nd XV 5 :: Tuam 18
Sligo’s 2nd team put up a battling performance against Tuam in Hamilton Park on Sunday last in a game which was much closer than the final score-line would suggest. Although they trailed by 10-5 at the interval, Sligo were unfortunate to have a try by full-back, Aaron Loftus disallowed, which would have at least levelled the scores before the break.
