Regional League Commences On Sunday

The new season officially kicks off on Sunday next when Sligo travel to Tuam to play the home side in the ‘warm up’ regional league. [Kick-off 3 p.m.] With a number of positions in the team likely to be keenly contested this season, this game will provide several players with the opportunity to stake a claim for a regular starting position.

Tuam are invariably very difficult to overcome at home, so a well contested encounter should be in the offing.

Prop forward, Ronan Gillespie is back in training and will give solidity to the front row, while team captain, Jamie Livingstone is likely to be back in action following his recent ankle injury. Sligo will also play Creggs and Carrick-on-Shannon in this league.

Juvenile And Youth Registration

Registration for all Juvenile players [i.e. U-7 to U-12 inclusive] and Youths [i.e.U-13 to U-18 inclusive], will take place at Sligo I.T. Sportsgrounds on Saturday next at 10 a.m. [Please note venue]. This season, both the Juvenile and the Youth sections have attracted two very generous sponsors. Juvenile rugby in the club will be sponsored by The Glasshouse Hotel, while Youth rugby will be sponsored by Miximo (Infacta Ltd.), whose Managing Director is Jonathan Hill. The club President, on behalf of the entire membership, extends his gratitude to both Michael O’Hehir [Director Glasshouse] and Jonathan for their generosity.

Training for both sections will commence on Saturday September 8th. The Juveniles will train and play their home games at Sligo I.T., while the Youths will train and play in Hamilton Park, until a suitable temporary venue is obtained.

Management for 2nd XV Announced

Sligo’s 2nd team for the upcoming Connacht Junior 2 League will have a very experienced quartet in charge. Two former club Presidents, Michael Storey and Des Butler will be joined by a former 1st XV coach, Fineen O’Driscoll and Declan Lynch, who have both, over many years, given trojan service to the club. With large numbers attending training, Sligo should field a very strong side in this grade.

Community Games Success

Congratulations to the Maugheraboy U-11 rugby squad and to the Ballymote U-11 Tag rugby squad, who each won bronze medals at the National Community Games finals at Mosney last week-end. Hard luck to the Coolera U-14 Tag rugby squad who lost by the narrowest of margins to the eventual gold medal winners in the semi-final.

Successful Week-End For 1st Team Squad

Twenty five 1st team squad members and their management had a very successful week-end away, when they availed of the excellent facilities at the Breaffy House Sports Hotel, Castlebar. In an action packed two days the players had a very busy schedule with pitch sessions, gym work and team meetings, as well as experiencing the delights of ice baths. The party had the opportunity to relax on Saturday night, but the the fact that everyone had to be on the pitch for a training session at 8 am on Sunday, ensured that the social activities were somewhat restrained.

Meanwhile, AIL side, DLSP, spent the weekend in Sligo, in the Glasshouse Hotel, for their pre-season ‘get together’, and trained in Hamilton Park on Saturday morning.

Community Games Success

Annual holidays, or perhaps the modesty and/or bashfulness of the respective managers, conspired to ensure that the author of these notes  was unaware that Sligo teams had a clean sweep in all the Connacht Community Games rugby finals a few weeks ago. Continue reading ‘Community Games Success’

U-13's For UL-Bohs Tournament

Sligo’s U-13′s will have a great opportunity to gauge their standard, as they have been invited to play in the special invitation Pat Lawler Tournament at the U.L. campus grounds on Saturday September 15th. The tournament commemorates the late Pat Lawler [father of Munster squad member,Mossie], a former under-age coach with the UL Bohemians club, and is regarded as the unofficial all-Ireland for this age group, as the top clubs in the four provinces will be in action. Last season [more] Sligo impressed the large attendance in Thomond Park, when they qualified for the final, and in the process defeated the legendary Shannon club, and also the hosts, ULBohs. The current U-13′s are coached by Michael O’Hehir, and can be relied on to perform well. As the action commences at 11 am on the 15th, it is likely that the squad will overnight in Limerick on Friday September 14th. Full details from Michael O’Hehir or from Youth Chairman, John Davey.

New Member Of Executive Committee

The President, Tom Gilligan, has appointed Niall Draper as a member of the club’s Executive Committee for the coming season.
