Sligo and Ballina Share Points In Dour Encounter

Sligo 0 :: Ballina 0

Sligo and Ballina played out a scoreless draw in last Sunday’s Connacht Junior 1 League tie at Heffernan Park, Ballina on Sunday last. In a game which never really came to life, a draw was probably a fair result, as both backlines failed to sparkle.

Sligo will derive more satisfaction from the result than their opponents, as the two league points gained, assures them of a place in the draw for next season’s AIB Junior Cup, while Ballina needed a win here, as well as victory in their upcoming final game with Ballinasloe to qualify for inclusion in the draw. Although Ballina had the advantage of the strong wind in the first half, it was Sligo who were the more impressive performers in the opening period. They nearly scored after 4 minutes, when left winger, Julian Rippon intercepted on half way and looked destined to score but was stopped by a fine covering tackle from centre, David Newman, five metres from the line.

Sligo monopolised the early possession,but apart from a good break from wing forward,Andrew Williams,they never threatened the defence.They had a great chance of breaking the deadlock in first half injury time.As Sligo threatened the Ballina line,second row,Daniel Carrabine was yellow-carded by referee,Noel Crowley for killing the ball.Sligo kicked the resultant penalty to the corner,but with a try imminent from a catch and maul against a depleted home pack,Ballina’s Philip Timoney stole the ball from Ross Mannion’s throw,and saved the day for his side.

Despite being favoured by the wind in the second half,Sligo made fewer incursions into Ballina territory.However,while Ballina were getting a lot of possession,their predictable running lines were well contained by Sligo.When team captain,Peter Mullan was sinbinned midway through the half,it looked ominous for Sligo,as the referee also awarded a penalty,40 metres from the posts,but to the relief of Sligo’s supporters,Ballina’s Easkey born full-back,Simon Wade was short with the kick.In Mullan’s absence,Ballina put pressure on both Sligo’s line-outs and scrums,but the defence held firm.Neither side,on the day,had a line breaker with the necessary pace to make the crucial incision,as the respective defences remained in control.

For Sligo, Andrew Williams at blind side was his team’s best performer. He tackled well,and was an effective ball carrier, while he stole some vital Ballina ball at the tail of the line-out. Elsewhere, David Gerrity gave another faultless display at full-back, while Julian Rippon on the left wing saw plenty of action, and cut out some dangerous attacks. Sligo’s scrum was always going forward, and while the line-out disrupted the Ballina hooker’s throws almost at will, they proceeded to turn over no fewer than seven of their own throw-ins, and this inconsistency almost proved to be their team’s undoing.
Sligo will be hoping for an improved display when they face Corrib in the opening round of the Cawley Cup on Sunday week in Hamilton Park.

Gallant U-14's Defeated In Final

Buccaneers 51 :: Sligo 10

A superb Buccaneers back-line paved the way for their team’s impressive victory over Sligo in the Connacht Under-14 League final at the Sportsgrounds, Galway on Sunday last. All eight Buccaneer tries were scored by their backs, as they played some spectacular rugby for players of this age group.

To their credit, Sligo more than matched Buccaneers in the forward exchanges, with the line-out, in particular doing very well. In this area, Caolan O’Hehir, jumping at No.2, dominated, as in addition to securing Sligo’s throw-ins, he also managed to filch some Buccaneers’ balls. Sligo’s scrum was also solid,and managed to take two balls against the head.
However this platform proved to be of limited value, as Sligo persisted in in passing along the line, rather than kicking for safety, and/or territory, when in defensive positions. Buccaneers’ backs were physically stronger and they had exceptional players in out-half, Jack Carty, centres, David Fagan and Conor Cassidy and winger, Conor Fitzgibbon, who accounted for all their side’s tries, by scoring two apiece.
Sligo battled gamely to the the end and were rewarded with two excellent tries. Wing forward, John Healy scored the first, when he collected at a ruck on the Buccaneers ‘22′, and crashed over. Their second try, scored by substitute, Ben Lynch, was a superb individual effort. Collecting the ball on half-way, he wrongfooted two opponents, and showing a great turn of pace, he outsped his persuers to touch down for a memorable try.
Big match nerves probably ensured that Sligo never reproduced their semi-final heroics. However, as they demonstrated all season they are a very talented squad, and they will certainly have learned from this game. It should not be long until they are in the winners’ enclosure. Great credit is due to coach, Michael O’Hehir, and his assistants, Tony Heath and Eddie O’Hehir for all their work with the squad all season.

Sligo:Jonathan Byrne, Robert Keegan [c.], Keith McGoldrick, Killian Cox, David Burke, Cathal Finneran, Gary O’Hehir, Gerry Keaney, Donal Rooney, David French, Caolan O’Hehir, Sean Conlon, Enda Connolly, David Heath, John Healey.
Subs: Martin Clarke for S.Conlon, James Clarke for D.Burke, Cathal Burke for J.Byrne, David Giblin for G.O’Hehir, Ben Lynch for R.Keegan, Shane Neary for D.Rooney.

Gerrity The Hero In Sligo Come-Back

Sligo 15 :: Castlebar 15

Sligo and Castlebar shared the spoils, 15-15, in this Connacht Junior 1 league game played at Hamilton Park on Sunday last. While Sligo had to rely on a last minute try to secure the draw, they will surely view this as a lost opportunity to not only have won, but also to have secured a bonus point.
They dominated exchanges in the opening quarter, and two fine tries from full-back, David Gerrity and scrum-half, Billy Leahy put them in pole position, as they led by 10-0 after twenty minutes. However, instead of building on this lead, and going on to secure the bonus for scoring four tries, they rested on their laurels, and allowed Castlebar back into the game.

A try from the visitors’ prop, Eugene Butterwort, converted by full-back, Richard Feeney, failed to rouse Sligo from their slumbers, and a penalty from Feeney just before the break levelled matters.Sligo suffered a further reverse early in the second half when winger,Kieran Flynn scored in the corner, to put his side ahead for the first time [15-10]. To their credit, Sligo camped in the Castlebar half for the remainder of the half, but some shoddy handling, and on occasions dubious decision taking thwarted their efforts. When substitute prop, Martin Feeney was yellow carded with eight minutes remaining, it looked ominous for Sligo. However, just at the death, they scored a spectacular try to spare their blushes. Following a penalty to the corner, No.8, Jamie Livingstone won the line-out, and when the maul was held up, the ball was moved across the line from Billy Leahy to Gavin Foley to Roger Burrows to Andrew Feeney. The winger fed full-back, David Gerrity, whose clever running line took him inside the cover, and he scored ten metres from the uprights. Gavin Foley’s conversion attempt drifted wide.
It was appropriate that Gerrity should score his team’s equaliser as he was their outstanding player all afternoon. Elsewhere, Billy Leahy, Ronan Gillespie, Jamie Livingstone and Ross Mannion impressed.
Sligo: D. Gerrity, A. Feeney, C. Culhane, G. Foley, J. Rippon, R. Burrows, B. Leahy, R. Gillespie, R. Mannion, J. Kelly, A. McHale, T. Sweeney, P. Mullan, J. Livingstone, G. Conneally. Subs: A.Williams for T. Sweeney. M. Feeney for J. Kelly. A. Tansey [not used].
