Sligo Lose out To Corinthians In Cup

Sligo made a disappointing exit from the Heineken Connacht Junior cup when they were defeated by Corinthians at Corinthian park on Sunday last. While the final score-line of 28-7 flatters the winners, they were undoubtedly the superior side on the day, and they played some impressive rugby. Although Sligo faced the stiff breeze in the first half, the scores were level, 0-0, after 20 minutes. Indeed Sligo almost scored a try after 6 minutes, when following a fine Billy Leahy break, the ball was moved wide and good handling by the backs put centre, Andrew Feeney away, but he was bundled into touch at the corner flag. However in the 20th minute, the decision of the referee to sin-bin Sligo’s captain, Peter Mullan following a ruck 20 metres from Sligo’s posts completely changed the game.

It was an extremely harsh and unwarranted decision, and as it emerged it had a vital bearing on the outcome. By the time their captain returned, Sligo trailed by 13-0, and Corinthians were in the ascendancy. Poor defensive work presented the winners with a try in the 5th minute of injury time in the first half.

Sligo failed to raise their game in the third quarter, as Corinthians added a further penalty. However, in the final 20 minutes they were camped in Corinthians’ territory, and only some last ditch defending denied them. Corinthians had two players sin binned for persistently killing the ball near the try line, but the referee did not see fit to award Sligo a penalty try. Sligo eventually got some consolation when scrum-half, Billy Leahy crossed for a try, which out-half Gavin Foley converted.

However, the game ended on a bizarre note, as the referee had called ‘last play’, and Sligo were on the attack inside their opponents half. A wayward pass was intercepted by Corinthian centre, Pat McGuckian, the man of the match, and he outpaced the cover to score.

Very few Sligo players played to their potential on this occasion, although Billy Leahy, and Roger Burrows in the backs, and Ronan Gillespie, Gary Conneally, Peter Mullan and Jamie Livingstone in the pack all tried hard on a day when Sligo got none of the breaks.

Sligo: Roger Burrows, Gary Boland, Andrew Feeney, Cathal Culhane, Joe Sweeney, Gavin Foley, Billy Leahy, Ronan Gillespie, Ross Mannion, Joe Kelly, Adrian McHale, Jamie Livingstone, Trevor Sweeney, Peter Mullan [c.], Gary Conneally. Subs: Julian Rippon for J. Sweeney, Warner Wilder for T.Sweeney, Martin Feeney for J. Kelly, Philip Henry for C.Culhane [inj.], Andrew Williams, Steven Connolly.

U-16's Defeat Corinthians

Sligo’s U-16′s defeated Corinthians in Hamilton Park on Sunday last in the Connacht league. The home side crossed for two tries in a convincing 12-0 victory. Second row, Aaron Spring touched down for the opening try in the first half, after good work by the pack. In the second half, winger Eanna O’Donnell scored an excellent try, with centre Rory Kerins providing the opening. Out-half, Niall Kenneally, who also had a fine game, converted this try.

Sligo 1st XV Play Buccaneers in Dubarry Park

League action resumes on Sunday when Sligo travel to Athlone to play Buccaneers. This game has a 1 pm kick-off to avoid a clash with the Wales V Ireland game on television. Both Cathal Culhane and Philip Henry who were injured in last Sunday’s cup game are doubtful starters. Sligo urgently need the points from this game to maintain their league challenge.

U-18's Meet Ballinasloe in Round-Robin

Sligo’s U-18′s play Ballinasloe in Hamilton Park on Sunday next [Kick-off 11 a.m.] in the opening round-robin play-off between the top six teams in the Connacht league, to decide on qualification for the all-Ireland league semi-final.

Club members retain happy memories of Sligo’s all-Ireland success in 2005, when our U-18′s, captained by Sean Gerrity, defeated Barnhall after an exciting final in Naas.

Under 13s on a run

The Under 13s have hit the ground (and the rucks!) running this year with two huge wins over Westport and Buccaneers in the past fortnight. In terrible conditions for both matches the team did the simple things really well and showed flair when required. Great credit must go to Sligo’s defence which only conceded one try in each match, winning the first game 42-5, and by 27-7 in the second.

Under 12s Blitz Longford

A total panel of 21 players arrived at a windswept Longford Rugby Club on Saturday 20th January.

Sligo were to play in their first blitz of 2007 and faced the prospect of three matches. After getting togged out and stretching their frozen limbs Sligo ran straight into their first match against the home side Longford. Whilst Sligo were still getting into stride Longford ran over a quick try, but undaunted, Sligo turned and pressurised Longford back into their own half. It wasn’t too long before Sligo had equalised. Another try was run in by Longford in deteriorating weather conditions, with the score at half time being 2-1 to Longford.

After a short break Sligo returned to the field recharged and quickly forced the equaliser, which they soon followed up with a third try into the far corner. As they relaxed a little bit Longford were given a penalty from which they successfully levelled the match. Then, in the dying minutes of the second half a concerted team effort from Sligo led to the winning try right by the corner post.

Sligo then moved to their next match, against Cavan, with fire in the blood and soon ran in two tries to lead 2-0 at half time. A good combination of plays between the forwards and backs created the opportunity for the third try. Again they relaxed just a bit too much and allowed Cavan to burst through for their first try of the match. When Sligo calmed down again and reformed they drove over the line to leave a final score of 4-1 in favour of Sligo.

Mullingar were the final team played by Sligo and a pair of tired teams faced up to each other. Sligo were still on fire, however, and despite the increasing hail they ran over to score first. As the temperature continued to fall and toes and fingers became numb in the wet cold mud, Mullingar rallied and equalised. Half time it stood one apiece, and the exhaustion showing on all the players’ faces told the story of hard fought play in the first half. At the turn around Sligo tried and tried again to force the Mullingar defence to break, and had two tries disallowed. Time was running out when the Sligo forwards stole the ball from a maul and released it out to the wing. Mullingar had defence in place until a well-timed pass allowed Sligo to break through and score in the corner just before the referee blew for full time.

Sligo had won all of their agreed matches, and Mullingar were such good sports that those players who had not had a run in the last match were welcomed out by their counterparts for a fourth “friendlyâ€? match.  The two teams slid, pushed, fell and drove each other from one end of the pitch to the other, with Mullingar getting first blood through a strong drive by their forwards. Every player was now in a mostly brown kit and fingers could not hold the ball, let alone another player. Time ticked away and Mullingar refused to crack at the back. Then the ball flew out of a ruck and out to the wing again. The far corner beckoned and was crossed, the referee blew  – the result a draw.

The panel:
Aaron Donnelan, Andrew Nairn, David Connell, James O’Hehir, Jamie McGovern, Leigh Dunne, Matthew Davey, Rory Molloy, Ben Ryan, Peter Murray, Eddie Weaver, Sean Finnegan, Daragh Kiely, Cian Allen-Kiely, Hannah Davey, Daragh Burke, Paul Mahon, Eoin Kilroy-Talbot, David McGrath, Jason McLaughlin, Killian Filan.

Under 8s win 2 out of 3 in Longford Blitz

A large group of Sligo u/8 made the journey to Longford for a blitz on Saturday. As the matches were 8 aside, this necessitated mulitple substitutions and posed difficulties for coaches in ensuring continuity and yet avoiding substitutes getting cold on the sidelines on a wintery day in the midlands.
In the first game against hosts Longford, Sligo ran into an impressive early lead and were 5 tries to nil up at one stage. On an increasingly heavy pitch Sligo conceded some early second half tries before running out 10 – 3 winners.

In deteriorating conditions Sligo faced a physically strong, tough-tackling Cavan side. In spite of remaining competitive throughout Sligo could never match the effectiveness of the Ulster team. Sligo also lost key players to injury making their task more difficult. The match eventually ended up in a 6 – 2 defeat, Sligo having been 4 – 1 down at half time.

Sligo’s final match was against Mullingar, as the drizzle began in earnest. Sligo were far superior to their Leinster opposition and ran out comfortable winners 6 -2. But for some missed tackles on a very heavy muddy pitch, Sligo could easily have kept their line intact as they were both physically bigger than their opponents and able to attack in wave after wave.

The Sligo squad included Owen Faragher, Mark Harte, Callum McGrath, Niall Gray, Graham Kerr, Tom O’Hara, Ruadhan Feeney, Niall Quinn, Ross Hickey, Cormac Murray, Tony O’Kelly-Lynch, Luke McDermott, Bobby O’Hara, Thomas O’Hehir, Luke Weaver, Freddie Stewart, David Boles, Jamie Murray, Jonathan East & Simon Gillespie.

Sligo Play Holders in Heineken Connacht Junior Cup

Sligo travel to Cornithian Park on Sunday next to play cup holders Cornithians in the first round of the Heineken’s Connacht Junior Cup. Kick off is at 2 o’clock. Cornithians, like Sligo, are something of cup specialists so a very competitive game is in the offing.

Since Sligo returned to Connacht Junior 1 ranks in the 1998/99 season, they have won the cup on two occasions,  in 1999 and 2005, and they were beaten finalists in 2000 and 2004.

Until recent times their record in competitive games against Cornithians was unimpressive, but in the last two league meetings between the sides, Sligo were successful on each occasion, and in September last they defeated the Galway city side by 25-6 in Corinthian Park, and secured a bonus point to boot.

Sligo will field an experienced team on Sunday as no fewer than five of the victorious 1999 side, Peter Mullan, Cathal Culhane, Gavin Foley, Joe Sweeney and Joe Kelly, who starred in that 1999 triumph will be in action. They can also call on a number of players such as Gary Boland, Billy Leahy, Jamie Livingstone, Andrew Feeney, Ronan Gillespie and Ross Mannion who are enjoying a rich vein of form at the moment. The experienced Roger Burrows, Adrian McHale, Trevor Sweeney, Martin Feeney, Andrew Williams, Julian Rippon and Warner Wilders will also have much to contribute, as Sligo will field their strongest team for several weeks.

As many supporters as possible are urged to make the trip and lend their support to the squad.

2nd XV Defeated in Westport

Sligo Second XV 5 – Westport Second XV 17

Sligo’s Second XV travelled to Westport and were defeated by the home team in a crucial Connacht Junior 2 League tie on Sunday last.

The visitors had to field without unavailable out-half, Frankie Feeney and the injured Steven Connolly. Sligo dominated exchanges in the opening quarter and led in the 20th minute. Former Sligo Grammar School star from the 1995 and 1996 Senior School Final, Philip Henry, had a very impressive return to Sligo colours after being abroad for a number of years. Henry glided through for Sligo’s try and created many problems for the winners’ defence subsequently.

However, Westport gradually assumed control and they went on to score three tries, and run out convincing winners. In addition to Henry, Calry native Brian Hynes starred at full-back and later at out-half. Thomas Quinn and James Coulter were impressive in the centre. In the pack, nineteen year old Terence O’Connor was the star and he received able assistance Skreen born Dermot Kiely and Warner Wilders, who was back in action after a prolonged period of inactivity due to injury.

International Ticket Allocation

The tickets for the upcoming International between Ireland and France in Croke Park on February 11th were allocated at a meeting of the club’s International sub-committee on Thursday last. Despite the 82,500 capacity of Croke Park, Sligo RFC received a mere 12 extra tickets compared to their usual allocation. However, requests to purchase tickets more than trebled. The tickets were distributed by the sub-committee strictly in accordance with the criteria published on Page 25 of 2006/07 Membership Handbook. All fully paid up club members who are also members of the club’s monthly draw and who are also active workers on behalf of the club were given the option to purchase tickets.

Coaching in Primary Schools

From mid-February until May, two Sligo I.T. Sport & Recreation students, Oonagh Morrissey from Oranmore, Co. Galway and Castlebar RFC player, Nigel Byrne, will be on work placement coaching rugby in local primary schools under the direction of Youth Development Officer, Gavin Foley. Both coaches were chosen following interviews with Connacht Branch of the IRFU, Sligo RFC and Sligo I.T. personnel. They will coach in 10 primary schools in the Sligo area and the project is being funded by Sligo RFC.

Representative Honours

Congratulation to U-18 player, Jason East, who played with the Connacht Youths against Ulster in the Galway Sportground on Saturday last. Jason is a member of the Ireland Youths squad.

Under 12s show resolve against Buccaneers

A total panel of nineteen players from the Under 12 squad travelled to Athlone on Saturday last.

In hostile conditions a total of four matches were played with Sligo and Athlone coming out with honours even. Amidst the gale-force winds and lashing rain try scoring was not an easy task. As usual Sligo were slow to awake, this being their first competitive meeting of 2007. Having let in a quick try from Athlone, the under 12 resolve showed forth and despite repeated pressure from Athlone the inevitable breakaway try to even the match was scored. The second Match ended without a try and the third ended two apiece. The rain now lashed like stones in the faces of both teams and discipline on both sides began to fail. Each match had run from one end of the pitch to the other, ending with a resolute wall of defence, either holding up the ball on the line or stealing a break against the play. In the end the final match was one each, but Sligo could have felt hard done by, having had a try disallowed.

No single player in the squad can be singled out. Each of the panel present showed resolute courage in the face of adversity. The Forwards  Jamie McGovern, James O’Hehir, Matthew Davey, Aaron Donnellan, Ben Ryan, Rory Molloy, Andrew Nairn, Stephen Martyn and David  all played magnificently often despite temporary injury, all with stony determination. The backs Jason McGoldrick, Cian Mulligan, Daragh Kielly, Hannah Davey, Cian Allen-Kielly, Eddie Weaver, Peter Murray, Sean Finnegean and Daragh Burke all played with total commitment and distinction.

The Under 12 squad, of which the nineteen who travelled today are a good representation, can be seen as a force to be reckoned with, with strength in depth, skill and determination in plentiful supply, and capable of playing any team in Ireland with distinction.

Under 8s triumphant in Athlone

A squad of 13 Sligo U8s faced Buccaneers in Athlone on Saturday last.

In the first of two matches Sligo got off to a great start being up 4 tries to 1 at half time but the hosts played themselves back into the match and went ahead 5 to 4 before, in the final play of the game Sligo scored a try to level matters 5 all. Sligo try scorers were Ross Hickey (2), Thomas O Hehir, Tony Kelly-Lynch and Ruadhan Feeney.

In the second match Sligo showed much greater tactical awareness and allowed Buccaneer’s two big players little opportunity to run at them. A combination of good tackling and strong competition by Sligo in the contact area allowed Sligo race into a 3 to nil half time lead. Although Sligo conceded two second half tries they ran out comfortable winners 4 to 2 as weather conditions deteriorated. Scorers for Sligo were Ross Hickey (3) and Ruadhan Feeney.

Team coaches were pleased by the committment shown by the full team as well as the effective tackling and ball-winning which saw them overcome their hosts.
