City XV 24 County XV 0

The City side proved too strong for the County team in the annual St. Stephen’s Day fixture in Hamilton Park. The game was played in ideal conditions before the biggest attendance at the venue this season.

Both teams included a number of players who play their rugby elsewhere. Included on the city side were AIL players, Mark Butler (UL Bohs), Paul Gillespie (Dublin University) and Shane Considine (Corinthians) as well as U-20 players Ross Butler (UL Bohs) and Simon Gillespie (UCD). Also in action for the winners were Paul Hogan (Nenagh) and Mark Harrigan (Ballinasloe). The county team had AIL player Niall O’Hara (Buccaneers) as well as Sean Henry (UL Bohs Academy), Jason Coulter(Peterborough RFC), Mark Coulter (Tullamore), Geoffrey Draper (Monkstown) and Buccaneers U-20 Player James Wilson.

The City team led by 12-0 at the interval with Ross Butler and Paul Gillespie crossing for tries while in the second half Butler again dotted down and towards the end scrum-half, Considine scored an opportunist try. Mark Butler landed two conversions.

Limavaddy Prove to be too Strong

Limvaddy had the upper hand over Sligo in the All-Ireland Junior Cup game played in Limvaddy on Saturday last. While the final score of 22-0 might suggest a facile victory for the home side, the scoreline certainly did scant justice to Sligo.

However, the visitors paid a heavy price for a poor opening quarter display, after which they trailed by 12-0. They rallied in the second quarter and there was no further score in this period save for a penalty for the winners by former Ireland out-half, Derek McAleese.

In the second half, Sligo continued to attack but could not breach the winners’ defence. Midway through this half, Sligo suffered a cruel blow when Limvaddy scored an intercept try, with McAleese converting. This effectively ended the game as a contest. In the closing minutes, Sligo opted to kick two penalties to the corners rather than for posts, as they went in search of the elusive try. Sligo’s best players were Roger Burrows at full-back, scrum-half Billy Leahy and Ronan Gillespie,Peter Mullan and Gary Conneally in the pack.

Some pictures

The U13s and the Juveniles travelled to Dublin recently for the Pacific Islands v Ireland match – but not before playing some rugby against Wanderers. More photos from the day can be found here and other matches here.

Heineken Connacht Junior Cup Draw

Sligo have been drawn away to cup holders Corinthians on January 28th, in the first round of this season’s Heineken Connacht Junior Cup. The draw took place on Monday week last in Bar 1, Castlebar. The winners of this tie will face either Westport, Ballina or Dunmore at home in the quarter final on February 25th, with the victors here being again at home in the semi-final on March 11th. The final will take place in the Galway Sportsgrounds on March 25th.
The draw did Sligo few favours, as Corinthians in Corinthian Park will be formidable opponents. There were 22 teams in the draw, but Sligo will be pleased not to have been drawn in the preliminary round. In this round, Westport must travel to Ballina for a Mayo derby, while Monivea face Tuam, the only team in the province to have defeated them this season.
