Sligo's Unbeaten Run Halted

Sligo 8 – Monivea 23

Sligo’s impressive run of victories in the Connacht Junior 1 League was halted, when they were deservedly defeated by Monivea in Hamilton Park on Sunday last, although the final score-line certainly flattered the winners.

Played in wet conditions, in front of one of the biggest crowds seen at the venue for several years, the game was was keenly contested. Sligo’s cause received a set-back before the start when player-coach Gavin Foley tweaked his hamstring in the pre-match warm-up, and while he played for the entire game, his movement was clearly restricted. Within one minute of the start, Sligo suffered a severe blow when open side, Warner Wilder, one of his team’s stars on the previous week, limped off with a knee injury. Their problems had reached crisis point in the 28th minute when out-half and play-maker, Jordan Farrington was forced to hobble off with an ankle injury.

Wilders was badly missed at the breakdown, while the backs, lacking Farrington’s and Foley’s influence, never functioned with their usual fluency. Monivea’s inside centre, Ian Murphy was the man of the match, as he scored his side’s first try, and proved to be uncannily accurate with the boot, landing five kicks from five attempts. The winners only other score was try from out-half, Seamus Fahy.

Wing forward, Gary Conneally scored Sligo’s try, when the pack mauled over the Monivea line midway through the first half, to give his side a 5-3 lead. Gavin Foley landed a penalty for Sligo before the interval. Monivea led by 16-8 at the break. Sligo’s defence was at fault for Fahy’s try 8 minutes into the second half. To their credit, Sligo’s pack dominated from this point onwards, as they camped in their opponents’ territory. On two occasions they opted to kick for the corners, rather than the posts, and No.8, Peter Mullan surely deserved a penalty try, rather than a penalty when he was cynically taken out, as he followed his own chip through near the Monivea line in the closing stages.

U13's win in Mullingar

Sligo’s U-13 squad, fresh from their Pat Lawlor Cup heroics in Thomond Park, travelled to Mullingar on Saturday last to play the home club. This was the side’s first experience of both the fifteen-a-side and full pitch rugby.

In an exciting game, Sligo were quickly out of the blocks, scoring two tries in the opening five minutes, as they led by 12-0, but they struggled for the remainder of the first-half.

However, in the second-half they dominated and only some last ditch defending prevented them from winning by a much wider margin.

While the pack’s lineouts and scrums were impressive, the side’s mauling and rucking game will require some remedial work on the training ground.

When this aspect of the side’s game is sorted out, the team’s impressive backline will have the opportunity to demonstrate its potential. The final score was Sligo 22, Mullingar 21.

Sligo’s scorers were Kieran Blake, (3 tries; 1 conversion); Diarmuid O’Dowd-Hill (1 try).

Sligo’s panel was as follows: Michael Davey, Matthew Davey, James Rooney, James Mullan, Brian Simon, Philip Moriarty, Ben Spellman, Martin Clarke, Diarmuid O’Dowd-Hill, Ross Gordan, Gerry O’Daly, David Jordan, Enda Roche, Enda Gavin, Owen Flanagan, Michael Martin, Eoghan Kilroy, Kieran Blake.

U-18s Impress Against Corinthians

Sligo’s U-18 team travelled to Corinthian Park on Sunday last and gained a highly creditable draw [15-15] against the previously unbeaten Corinthians in the Connacht league. Sligo’s scorers were Gary Monaghan and Keelan Cawley, a try each, and captain, Cathal Sheridan, a conversion and a penalty. The penalty, the last action of the day was a superb effort from the touch-line, and 45 metres from goal. Well done to the entire squad and their coaches, Roy Cooper and Ciaran Foley.

Sligo: Brendan Glynn, Joseph Scanlon, Niall McCann, Jonathan Higgins, Fergal Dooney, Keelan Cawley, Cathal Sheridan[c.], Philip Allen, Richard O’Boyle, Craig Cooper, Eamonn Keane, David Bergin, Michael Conlon, Gary Monaghan, Stuart O’Brien. Sub: Barry Cullen for G.Monaghan.

A speedy recovery is wished to outstanding No.8, Gary Monaghan, the scorer of Sligo’s first try, who had to retire after 10 minutes with a dislocated collar bone.

Match Of The Day In Hamilton Park

On Sunday next [Kick Off 3 p.m.] Sligo play Monivea in a top of the table clash in the Connacht Junior 1 League. Both sides are unbeaten, with Sligo holding a two point lead in the league table, by virtue of gaining two more bonus points than their opponents. A cliffhager seems in prospect. Sligo must plan without the unavailable Trevor Sweeney, and the injured Julian Ripon, Steven Connolly and Neil Draper. They will be hoping that Joe Sweeney and David Gerrity will have recovered in time, and that vice-captain, Billy Leahy who carried an injury into the Loughrea game is back to full fitness.

Sligo Remain On Top Of Table

Sligo 26 – Loughrea 15

Sligo gained their fifth bonus point in succession when they travelled to Loughrea and defeated the home side in a keenly contested game in the Connacht Junior 1 League. Sligo were forced to fight hard by the home side, who fielded what must be one of the strongest packs in the league.

Sligo got a nightmare start as Loughrea scored a fortuitous try within a minute.A Sligo clearance was charged by the alert home outhalf, Brad Moffitt, and he dived over, and added the conversion points.

Playing against the wind, Sligo were forced to defend, but were level in the 15th minute, when after a  flowing backs’ movement, Gary Boland scored a spectacular try, which was converted by out-half, Jordan Farrington. Loughrea went back into the lead straight from the kick-off. No Sligo player took responsibility for the deep delivery, and the ball was then dispatched to touch 10 metres from Sligo’s line. Loughrea mauled their line-out all the way over for an unconverted try. Sligo trailed by 15-7 after 25 minutes when Moffitt converted a 35 metre penalty for hands in the ruck. However, five minutes before the break Farrington scored a fabulous individual try when he broke at half way, and dotted down near the posts. He also converted to reduce arrears to the minimum [15-14] at half time.

Full back, Boland scored his team’s third try six minutes after the restart, with Farrington again converting, and the young Kiwi capped a brilliant outing when he jinked his way over for his team’s fourth try in the 20th minute. Sligo almost had a fifth try at the death, but wing forward, Warner Wilders just failed to hold Jamie Livingstone’s pass on the line.

Sligo’s stars on the day were Farrington, Wilders, who had one of his best ever games in the club colours, and Boland. Elsewhere, Livingstone and Gary Conneally in the pack and Gavin Foley in the backs did well. Overall it was a hard earned victory, with Sligo avenging their 19-7 Connacht Junior Cup defeat at same venue last February.

Associate Referees Course – UPDATE

UPDATE: Course postponed until November 15th – Please contact Michael Storey for further details (086 8198540)
Memo from Connacht Branch regarding Refereeing
As you are aware it is now I.R.F.U.policy that persons who referee matches in your club must have the appropriate qualification. This policy was introduced by the IRFU on the strong advice of our brokers who believe that future club liability insurance may not cover ‘on field activity’

Implications
This means that the common practise of coaches or well intentioned individuals refereeing matches due to the lack of official referees will no longer be acceptable
in your club interests and is in breech of Union Policy.

As you can see from above, all personnel involved with coaching youth and under age rugby would be advised to attend the forthcoming Associate Referees course
on 17th October 2006 this Tuesday 7.15 pm (at the Club House) and any club member who has ever been called on to referees a game.

Jason for Connacht!

Sligo RFC U-18 player and Sligo Grammar School prop, Jason East, played a major role in the Connacht U-18′s very creditable 22-0 victory over Munster at Garryowen R.F.C.’s grounds in Dooradoyle on Saturday last.

Jason, who is a member of the Connacht Academy, looks destined for a very bright future in the game.

Deserved recognition for Denis

Denis Connolly, one of Sligo’s Connacht Branch referees, who also serves as chairman of the club’s grounds committee, had his refereeing talents suitably recognised when he served as the fourth official at last Friday night’s Magners League game between Connacht and Ulster in the Galway Sportsgound. The fourth official has an onerous task, as he is responsible for logging blood subs, timing the sin bins and checking on all substitutions.

It certainly was a busy weekend for Denis, who prior to his departure to referee for a 12.00 p.m. kick-off in Monivea on Sunday, had Sligo’s pitch lined and in pristine condition for the Corrib game.

U16 ‘s Pick up First League Points

Sligo U16’s picked up their first league points with a fine win over Westport on Sunday last. After a crushing 39 -12 loss in their first match v Galwegians the previous weekend the Sligo boys were keen to put that behind them and started the match at tremendous pace playing into a strong wind. The Sligo pack were first to every breakdown and were rucking well which gave the backs plenty of good ball to move which proved very entertaining for the home crowd. The match was 15 minutes in when out-half Niall Kenneally moved the ball down the blind side just inside Sligo’s 22 and send winger Eanna o Donnell on a blistering run and he showed his strength and pace to evade a number of tackles to run the length of the pitch and score under the posts, Kenneally added the conversion.

With the Sligo front row props Thomas Gormley and Craig Adams and hooker Thomas Stenson exerting continuous pressure on the Westport scrum the cracks began to appear and with the ball moving along the line centre Chris Nairn sold a neat dummy to wrong foot the Westport defence and run some 35 metres to score, Kenneally again added the points.

At this stage it was all Sligo and again they moved the ball wide and winger Conor Gleeson (who had a fine match) was just stopped short, from the resultant ruck scrumhalf Donal Brady fed Craig Adams who burst through the cover but the try was not given as he was adjudged to have made a double movement as he grounded the ball, by the efficient ref James Gavin who right up with play throughout the game.

The half time whistle blew and Sligo looked very comfortable. From the kick off Sligo had a scrum back at half way but with poor decision making and over elaboration they were not able to make use of their possession. With 10 minutes left and Westport remaining resolute in defence it took the tireless work of lock Michael McMorrow ( man of the match) to get another line-out steal and begin the rolling maul on half way, Sligo No 8 Tighe Power then broke from the maul and took off on a smashing run to be stopped just on the 22 he laid the ball back beautifully to Brady in support who fed to Aaron Spring at speed and the athletic lock drew the cover before laying off to captain Rory Kearins who delivered a superb long pass to Eanna O Donnell who skipped over in the corner for the score of the match. Keneally again added the points from a difficult position.

Sligo then were well and truly on top and the wing forwards James Clarke and Cian Griffin who had worked hard throughout the match had finally tamed a tough Westport back-row. Thomas Gormley picked up a shoulder injury and was replaced by Ronan Scott and Diarmuid O Flaherty replaced the tiring Craig Adams and Simon Wilson came in at second row, in the back line it gave Jermy Price an opportunity to taste the action at full back for Paul Kelly who had a steady game throughout, the energetic Peter Walpole came in on the wing and newcomer David McGowan also made his debut.

These changes upped the momentum and Sligo continued to drive forward and Westport were again penalised and Kenneally struck a fine kick to leave the final score 24 to nil for a well deserved victory.

Sligo wish a speedy recovery to two Ballymote players David Scanlon and Darren Morrison and look forward to having them back in full fitness after Christmas and also to having the two Geevagh stars Pat Hughes and Enda Mc Manuas rejoining the squad once their gaelic duties are at an end.

Sligo v Loughrea

Sligo travel to Loughrea on Sunday next to play the home side in Round 5 of the Connacht Junior 1 League [Kick-Off 3 p.m..]. We have unhappy memories of our last visit to this venue, as Loughrea beat us by 19-7 in the Connacht Junior Cup. A keenly contested game is anticipated.

Support would be very welcome on Sunday.

Sligo Retain League Leadership

Sligo 31 – Corrib 12

Sligo retained leadership of the Connacht Junior 1 League when they scored an impressive victory over Corrib at Hamilton Park on Sunday last. Although favoured by the strong wind in the first half, Sligo made an uncertain start, so it was the visitors who made the early running. They led by 6-3 after 17 minutes, with full-back, Mike Monaghan landing two penalties, with Sligo out-half, Jordan Farrington replying from the ’22′. Two further Farrington penalties gave Sligo a 9-6 interval lead. With wind advantage, Corrib attacked from the restart, and drew level with another Monaghan penalty after 3 minutes.

This score seemed to rouse Sligo from their slumbers, and they dominated exchanges for the remainder of the game, and in the process scored four tries, thus earning a bonus point. Corrib’s only reply was another penalty from Monaghan. All of Sligo’s tries were well worked. Second row, Andrew Williams scored the first when he peeled from a ruck, and raced 15 metres to score. Full-back, Gary Boland notched the second when he outpaced the cover to score in the corner following good work from the pack, and backs, Gavin Foley and Roger Burrows, with Farrington landing a brilliant touch-line conversion.

Sligo got their third try when the pack mauled over, following a line-out in the corner, with wing forward, Gary Conneally touching down. With two minutes remaining, Roger Burrows scored the fourth try after good work from No.8 and captain, Peter Mullan.

Sligo’s stars on this occasion were Jamie Livingstone, Peter mullan and Ross Mannion in the pack, with Roger Burrows giving another fine display in the backs.

Sligo: Gary Boland, Andrew Feeney, Cathal Culhane, Gavin Foley, Roger Borrows, Jordan Farrington, Billy Leahy, Jamie Livingstone, Andrew Williams, Gary Conneally, Peter Mullan [c], Warner Wilders.
Subs: Joe Kelly for A.Williams [inj.], Steven Connolly for W. Wilders [inj.], David Gerrity for R.Burrows.
